Reading | All That Is Evident Is Suspect: A Unique Group of Thinkers

This is the launch of the forthcoming issue of the most comprehensive English publication dedicated to OuLiPo (which stands for Ouvroir de littérature potentielle; roughly translated as “workshop of potential literature”). Editor Daniel Levin Becker will be present. All That Is Evident Is Suspect is the first collection in English to offer a life-size picture of OuLiPo in its historical and contemporary incarnations, and the first in any language to represent all of its members (numbering 41 as of April 2018). Combining fiction, poetry, essays and lectures, and never-published internal correspondence—along with the acrobatically constrained writing and complexly structured narratives that have become synonymous with oulipian practice—this volume shows a unique group of thinkers and artists at work and at play, meditating on and subverting the facts of life. Daniel Levin Becker is an American writer, translator and musical critic holding a BA in English from Yale University. In 2009, at age 24, he was elected member of Oulipo, making him the second American member of this group and the youngest member at the time. A frequent contributor to The Believer, he’s also translated French texts like Georges Perec’s dream journal La Boutique Obscure and Hervé Le Tellier’s short story “A Few Musketeers.”
