Discussion | Rewriting History: The Politics of Memory in Poland (online)

In 2018, Poland's nationalist government enacted a law which criminalized speech that holds Poland responsible for Nazi crimes. Forced by international pressure to withdraw the criminal provisions, nationalists promised instead to use civil litigation to achieve their aims. In 2021, for the first time, the law was used to target Holocaust scholars in civil court. As Poles wrestle with their ancestors' roles during the Holocaust, observers inside the country and across Europe are sounding alarms over the whitewashing of history. This is a conversation about the politics of memory with leaders in Polish civil society, including Dr. Jan Grabowski, one of the historians sued for his research; Dr. Dariusz Stola, the former director of POLIN: Museum of the History of Polish Jews; and Konstanty Gebert, a journalist and founder of the Polish Jewish monthly Midrasz. The discussion will be moderated by Rachel Donadio, a contributing writer for The Atlantic.

Discussion | Two Years After Insurrection: Violent Extremism and the Threat to Our Democracy (online)

On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-president Donald Trump attacked the US capitol. They wanted to prevent Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election results and Joe Biden as president of the United States. Two years later, the fallout from January 6th continues. Over 900 people have been charged from assault, to the destruction of government property and 140 members of law enforcement were injured. Trump has continued to stoke the flames, including hosting known white supremacists at his Mar-A-Lago residence, and the House Elect Committee on January 6th has surfaced bombshell findings with committee president Liz Cheney to find the former president was personally and substantially involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Farai Chideya of Our Body Politic and Dr. Barbara F. Walter have a conversation about violent extremism, the threat it poses to our democracy, where it comes from, and what's being done about it.
