Film | Living In A Nonsense Place (2024): Documentary Screening and Conversation

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela and the synchronous theatrical release of Living in a Nonsense Place, there will be a screening of this award-winning documentary which garnered international acclaim. The film by Noreen Ash Mackay (NAM) was shot clandestinely in apartheid South Africa. It reveals the harrowing existence of a community of black people living illicitly in the rubble of what was once a beautiful Cape Dutch mansion in white suburbia. The house will be replaced by an ugly layered-cake office block. There has been ‘white-flight’ from the unrest in downtown Johannesburg to a tree-lined suburb designated the new downtown. The residents are actively employed in demolishing the very house they’re squatting in to make way for the apartheid-driven redevelopment. At that time, it was illegal to be black in a white area after dark. Captured under perilous conditions, the subject matter being too contentious to be edited in South Africa, NAM risked arrest and the confiscation of the footage in smuggling it out. She faced a perilous moment boarding an international flight with the reels surreptitiously packed in a carry-on bag. Awarded an NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) post-production grant, NAM edited the film in NYC. The final edit was completed in New South Africa on the very television station that would previously have banned it. Following the screening, the documentarian NAM will host a Q&A session to share the challenges of bringing this story to life.

Discussion | A Conversation with Famed Photographer Annie Leibovitz

On the occasion of the final day of Annie Leibovitz: Stream of Consciousness, on view at Hauser & Wirth 22nd Street, this is an unforgettable conversation with Leibovitz and artist Amy Sherald, moderated by President of the Ford Foundation, Darren Walker. Annie Leibovitz: Stream of Consciousness presents a group of works by the distinguished American artist. Foregoing a linear timeline or conventional thematic constraints, the exhibition is conceived to reveal glimpses into Leibovitz's highly associative thought processes, creating a fluid visual dialogue among photographs that aren't anchored in the moment they were made. It includes landscapes, still lifes and portraits, including a portrait of Sherald in her childhood home.

Dance Performance | Dance Works on Human Entanglement with Nature

Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble present visually captivating programs that explore human entanglement with nature. The company's showcases highlight the climate change-themed collaboration between choreographer Jody Sperling and environmental composer Matthew Burtner. The performance features excerpts from Sperling-Burtner works. Their newest collaboration, Arbor, dwells on the nature of trees. In Wind Rose, dancers render changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight, sound, and touch. The solo Piece for a Northern Sky is a stunning meditation on planetary motion. All of these works employ the company’s signature style involving the use of body-extending costuming that abstracts the essence of human movement into elemental and organic forces.

Concert | Duration of Mountains and Seas: Chinese Music Meets Electronica

A musical showcase that refigures ancient mythology, creating a fantastic universe where Chinese music meets electronica to traverse through time and space. Conceived and created by composer/musician Hu Chenyun, the event includes the electronic music duo Frankfurt Helmet and a group of well-regarded musicians from the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. This performance is inspired by the great classic of ancient Chinese mythology, Classic of Mountains and Seas (3rd Century B.C.), exploring a world of mythical beings and vast geographies. The creative intermingling of Chinese instruments such as suona, pipa, and konghou with electronic voices creates a space where technology and nature--and past and future--are placed in vibrant dialogue.
