Discussion | “The Class Act”: A Tap Dancing Icon

Tap historian, teacher and performer Ann Killkelly gives a presentation and leads a discussion on the "Class Act," an icon in the tap world that conjures up great tap duos like Coles and Atkins, elegant presentation, and rhythmic sophistication. The idea of class also brings up status and legitimacy, and connects to the development of tap from social and popular origins, street corners and dance halls into more formal concert presentation. Class is also the place where many, maybe most, tap dancers today learn the form. How do these two ideas about "class" connect, and what do they mean to dancers then and now? How do we learn tap? Why do we go to class? How are "class" and "the class act" important ideas in tap performance and choreography? Enjoy film clips from tap history that "send up" the idea of class in choreography and imagery and join in on a conversation about how choreographers, performers, teachers, and students think of themselves as "classy," "classed," and/or "classic."

Living an active, outdoor, nature0filled life in NYC is challenging but certainly not impossible. This illustrated lecture will introduce many aspects of outdoor living that most New Yorkers might not notice such as fossil hunting, navigating with stars, predicting the weather from nature, building a radio that does not require electricity and even how to make coffee from a bean that grows in Central Park. The message is not simply about spending more time outdoors. It is also about the act of doing, being creative, civic mindedness and learning skills that will make you become an interesting and more evolved person.
