Jazz | Winard Harper / Craig Harris, Jazz Drummer and Trombonist


Harper, the noted jazz drummer, has played with Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and Betty Carter. From 1988 to 1993 he worked with his brother, trumpeter Philip Harper, in the group The Harper Brothers. In the early 2000s he worked with his own sextet, including for performances at Lincoln Center in New York City. Jazz trombonist and composer Harris (pictured), who has been a major figure in the jazz avant-garde movement since his stint with Sun Ra in 1976. Subsequently, he has worked with such notable artists as Abdullah Ibrahim, David Murray, Lester Bowie, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Muhal Richard Abrams and Charlie Haden. Harris has also recorded as leader for such labels as India Navigation, Soul Note and JMT.

This double bill brings together two great South American acts. The Venezuelan party band Los Amigos Invisibles is a lusty outfit that combines a “love of disco and funk with their reverence for old-fashioned Latin dances like the mambo and bossa-nova” (New York Post).
