Screening | The Music Instinct: Science and Song, a Documentary on Music and Our Brains

A screening and lecture with filmmaker Elena Mannes. In her new documentary neuroscientist Daniel Levitin leads a group of researchers as they investigate music’s fundamental physical structure; its biological, emotional and psychological impact; its brain-altering and healing powers, and its role in human evolution. Together with an array of musicians from rock and rap to jazz and classical featured in the film such as Yo-Yo Ma, Bobby McFerrin, Evelyn Glennie and Jarvis Cocker, researchers and scientists are putting music under the microscope. And there’s new evidence that music can actually change the physical structure of the brain - a fact that has critical implications for both education and medicine.

Starting at 7pm, there will be three pre-screening performances: Klong Sabut Chai - Drum Call: A ceremonial performance from Northern Thailand used in ancient times as a war cry before battle - calling upon the spirits for courage, perseverance and luck. As time and tradition evolved the ceremony has been adapted to be used before a grand opening or at the beginning of a festival. Light shining from the candles is elegantly maneuvered with a soft and gentle hand spreading luck as far as the light reaches. Bang Rajan re-enactment: The famous story of Bang Rajan is used to show off demonstrations of ancient Thai weaponry and fighting techniques. These techniques include sword-fighting, and Muay Thai, which has evolved into a thriving and popular martial arts sport. Plus, authentic Thai cuisine provided by Thai Pavilion.
