Concert | radio.string.quartet.vienna performs the Mahavishnu Orchestra

In the year 2000 a proposal by accordionist and composer Klaus Paier marked the beginning of what later became the radio.string.quartet: all-rounder Bernie Mallinger put together a string quartet for Paier’s CD moviemento, which was enthusiastically acclaimed by the critics and was nominated for the Austrian Amadeus Award. After personal changes and numerous musical projects the quartet adopted its today’s name. The “radio” in the name stands for contemporary, multifaceted music as well as for entertainment. They demonstrate their uniqueness in playing the works of McLaughlin’s thrilling 70’s electric jazz band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, giving much attention to the details and structure of the original composition. The classical instruments, two violins, a viola and a cello merge into a new sound that proves to be more than worthy to honor McLaughlin’s music. Bernie Mallinger’s and Johannes Dickbauer’s violins, Cynthia Liao’s viola and Asja Valcic’s cello will take you to places that you won’t expect.

Theater | New York Euripides Summer Festival: Alcestis

Euripides’ earliest dated extant tragedy contains elements not encountered in any other tragedy. Because it was originally submitted as the fourth part of a tetralogy, the fourth work usually being a Satyr play, it uses a tragicomic tone, making it unique in that it is a tragedy with, surprisingly, a happy end. Presented by American Thymele Theatre.
