Concert | 2nd Annual Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival with Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens

A free neighborhood celebration of music, food, and wine. The musical guest is Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens. Shelton is no ordinary gospel singer. Though she, like many others, grew up singing with her sisters in their Alabama church, she has also spent much of her life in the soul clubs around New York, and her 45s, “41st St. Breakdown” and “Wind Your Clock” b/w “Talking ‘Bout a Good Thing,” have long been revered and prized by funk DJs around the globe. Now, with her first official full-length release coming this May, it’s clear that her singing is equally influenced by both facets of her life. This is soul music – informed by the church, perhaps, but soul music nonetheless, relatable to all.

Discussion | Discussion on the Exhibition Experimental Georgraphy

The critically-acclaimed exhibition Experimental Geography debuts in New York this summer at a moment when human relationships with and cultural responses to the geographic – from earthquakes to oil spills - are markedly on our minds. The traveling exhibition explores the distinction between geographical study and artistic experience of the earth, as well as the junctures where the two realms collide. It presents a new practice through a wide range of mediums including interactive computer units, sound and video installations, photography, sculpture, and experimental cartography created by nineteen artists or artist teams from seven countries including the United States. Issues of geography and cartography through artistic engagement with the earth’s surface will be explored in this panel discussion with exhibition curator Nato Thompson, artists Lize Mogel and Trevor Paglen, and David Harvey, social theorist.
