Lecture | Cheryl Harris Sharman discusses her book Nightshift NYC

New York has been called the city that never sleeps by filmmakers, songwriters, and at least a century's worth of news stories. It is the other New York, when the city is left to those who know it best. They relish the empty sidewalks and streets, relax into the slower pace, and -- gasp -- talk to each other like old friends in a small town. There are those who live in the night, and there are those who work the nightshift. They are the fry cooks and coffee jockeys, train conductors and cab hacks, the cops, the docs, and the fishmongers selling cod by the crate. They are also the immigrant newcomers, the underemployed, and the economically marginalized. An award-winning writer and researcher will share some of their stories.

Discussion | Donald Barthelme Considered: A Strange Object Covered in Fur Which Breaks Your Heart

Critics can’t quite agree: was Barthelme the end of modernism or the first practitioner of American post-modern narrative? In a weirdly Barthelmean twist, he won the National Book Award in 1972 for a children’s book entitled The Slightly Irregular Fire Engine; or The Hithering Thithering Djinn—the exuberance of that title speaks volumes about the obsessions of this writer who produced some of the most inventive fiction of the post-war period. Join the National Book Foundation and a panel of acclaimed writers for a discussion of Barthelme’s legacy, influence, and narrative innovations. Panelists: Emily Barton is the author of the novels Brookland and The Testament of Yves Gundron, both named New York Times Notable Books of the Year. Tracy Daugherty’s Hiding Man: A Biography of Donald Barthelme was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 2009. Stacey D’Erasmo is the author of 3 novels, and her critical writing has appeared in such publications as The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, and Ploughshares. David Gates is the author of two novels and a collection of stories, The Wonders of the Invisible World.

Talk | Typographic Comics

Join James Pannafino for a presentation about Typographic Comics. Type (or typographic) Comics are comic books that use typography in place of imagery as the primary method of storytelling. Most traditional comics are sequential art based with letters and sound effects as supporting devices. Type Comics use design principles, typographic layout, and careful page composition to create a unique narrative experience. Pannafino is a faculty member at Millersville University, Pennsylvania in the Art and Design Department where he teaches graphic and interactive design courses. His research interests include information design, visualization, sequential art, digital narrative forms, and visual storytelling. His first book Common College Sense uses visual diagrams in a sequential order to communicate common-sense tasks.

Author Reading | 3 Writers: Julia Holmes / Kira Henehan / Adam Golaski

A dark satire rendered with all the slapstick humor of a Buster Keaton film, JULIA HOLMES' debut novel Meeks evokes the strange charm of a Haruki Murakami novel in a dystopic setting reminiscent of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. KIRA HENEHAN was born in New York and grew up in various locales around the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean. Her work has been published in Fence, jubilat, Chelsea, Conjunctions, and Denver Quarterly, among others. She has been included in A Best of Fence: The First Nine Years, an anthology. ADAM GOLASKI is the author of Color Plates, a "museum" that houses connected little stories drawn from the paintings of Eduoard Manet, Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Mary Cassatt, and Worse Than Myself, a collection of strange stories.

Concert | The Beach Boys, Rock & Roll Legends

You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they've had and how many millions of albums they've sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you're assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles ("I Get Around," "Fun, Fun, Fun", "Wouldn't It Be Nice") and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt.
