Concert | Americana Music with Roosevelt Dime and Tin Pan

Music lovers are invited to bring lunch, join friends and relax to enjoy a taste of New York’s eclectic “underground” music scene. Imagine yourself relaxing on a steamboat as it lazily floats down the Mississippi River all the way to The Big Easy. Suddenly, the band strikes up a tune, music fills the air and everyone is on their feet, clapping, dancing and singing along. Welcome to the world of Roosevelt Dime, a five-piece, Brooklyn, N.Y.-based band that blends elements of acoustic jug-band blues, classic Motown soul and modern alt-country to create an original sound best described as King’s County Steamboat Soul. The band’s nontraditional lineup — consisting of banjo, bass, drums/percussion, trumpet/cornet and woodwinds — and seamless mixture of musical genres has already caught the eye of many publications, including the New York Times. Now, the group is poised for a breakthrough with its new album, Steamboat Soul. From the secret sound that emerges from a hidden city’s corner comes the soundtrack of the speak-easy, reflecting on dancing into the night and waking up to start again. Using instruments from the Mississippi Delta string-band tradition and the style of a New Orleans street party, Tin Pan presents acoustic roots music boiled down to the heart of Americana. Performing over two hundred times a year and entertaining tens of thousands from all over the world, the band’s singer, Jesse Selengut, has this to say, “I’m so happy to see the music I love getting such a great response. When I see little kids dancing with their grandparents and we get all the couples smiling and moving . . . that’s when I know the music is working.”

Jazz | Jazz Outdoors: Lionel Loueke Trio / Edmar Castaneda Trio

Originally from the West African nation of Benin, guitarist Lionel Loueke has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past several years. He was picked as top Rising Star guitarist in Down Beat magazine’s annual Critics Poll in 2008 and 2009. Loueke met bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth at Berklee College of Music. Together they have released two albums on Blue Note Records and developed an incredible rapport. The trio “artfully integrates percussive, chiming harmonics, idiosyncratic tunings, and wondrously intricate time signatures” (SF Jazz). Opening act Edmar Castaneda, from Bogotá, Colombia, has taken New York and the world stage by storm with his virtuosic command of the Colombian harp. He has revolutionized the way audiences and critics alike consider the instrument. Soprano saxophonist Shlomi Cohen and drummer/percussionist Dave Silliman complete the Edmar Castaneda Trio. Singer/songwriter Andrea Tierra brings her rare contralto voice to this one-of-a-kind musical brew.Bring a blanket for lawn seating (no chairs are allowed).

Video | Future Formats: Video in a New Decade

Look to the future with a special summer screening featuring a group of young artists who are redefining the use of video in contemporary art at the beginning of the century's second decade. Coming of age in turbulent times, they confront a world in the throes of radical transformation—economic, political, social, technological and biological. The moving image is also evolving in 2011, proliferating and staking a high-definition claim on every screen and each new digital platform. Produced in the last two years, the works in Future Formats offer a glimpse of where artists may take the medium in the coming decade as they harness new technologies and consider their complex implications. The videos in the program range from seductive, immersive CGI investigations and fictional, simulated documentary to commercials without a product and comedic art criticism made for YouTube audiences. With: Uri Aran, A.K. Burns, Sean Monahan and Greg Fong, Andrew Lampert, Shana Moulton, Takeshi Murata, Ryan Trecartin, Leilah Weinraub, Yemenwed, and Hennessy Youngman.

Concert | Latin Music: Jarabe de Palo / Ely Guerra / Novalima / Mr. Pauer

Jarabe de Palo (pictured) is a Latin rock group from Spain led by Pau Donés. With a sound that is characterized as a fusion of rock and blues with Latin American rhythms, the group is regarded as among the most original contemporary Spanish groups. With hit singles such as “La Flaca” and “Depende,” as well several successful albums, they have also had many international collaborations with artists such as The Pretenders and Italian superstar, Jovanotti. Mexican songstress Ely Guerra is a staple of the Latin music scene, with a cadre of successful albums such as Lotofire and Sweet, Sour, Hot & Spicy under her belt. Her unique sound has successfully mesmerized audiences. In 2010, her Grammy-winning album, Hombre Invisible was released to rave reviews, including The New York Times, which said her music is infused with “passion [that] is profound and all-consuming, a matter of ecstasy or desperate need.” Since 2001, Novalima has been breaking down boundaries, uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres, communities and generations to create an inspiring movement that has revolutionized the music scene in their native Peru. By deftly blending traditional Afro-Peruvian music and modern DJ culture, Novalima searches for the common ground between past and future, between tradition and innovation. As a Latin Grammy nominee for Best Alternative Album, Novalima has garnered critical acclaim from both mainstream and underground media.
