Another example of an event that you can attend all year round on weekdays is Federal Reserve Bank Tour, which takes place every week day at 1 pm (but advanced reservations are required). You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. If you are classical music afficionado, you can spend whole day in New York going from one free classical concert to another. Get tips from a master to improve your chess game, and then test your new skills! Grandmaster Susan Polgar returns with a lecture and "Simul" game in which he'll play up to 30 players simultaneously, moving from board to board, making one move at a time. All are welcome to enjoy the lecture and cheer on Simul participants. 30 players of any age with an official US Chess Federation rating of 1,000 or better can participate in the Simul when registered on a first-come first-served basis from 9:30 am - 10:00 am on the morning of the event. Boards and pieces are available to borrow for anyone not participating in the Simul who wishes to play a friend.

Extraordinary Moves is an 8-day series. Today: New York Premiere! The Dancer Films is a collection of very short films based on Jules Feiffer's beloved cartoon character, the modern Dancer. Director Judy Dennis brilliantly translates six of Feiffer's memorable cartoonsˆ’A Dance to Spring, A Dance to Art, A Dance to Summer, A Dance to the Loss of Innocence, A Dance to the New Year, and A Dance to the End of Summer from the page to the soundstage, alchemizing drawing into dance for film. Brought to life by Merce Cunningham Dance Company dancer Andrea Weber, the Dancer is an icon to optimism and earnestness as she dances to celebrate a cycle of seasonal, emotional and political milestones. Produced by Ellen and Judy Dennis. Choreography by Susan Marshall and by Larry Keigwin, and original music by Jane Ira Bloom. Playing continuously from 11am to 7pm daily.

Concert | Latin Sounds: ChocQuibTown / Rita Indiana / Ursula 1000 / Que Bajo?!


ChocQuibTown (pictured) is Colombia's most popular hip-hop group. Their innovative sound fuses funk, hip-hop, Jamaican ragga, and electronic music in order to produce elaborate beats that incorporate traditional rhythms from Colombia's Pacific coast, as well as other Latin and Carribbean sounds such as salsa, songo and guajira. As winners of the 2010 Latin Grammy for best alternative song for their hit, “De Donde Vengo Yo,” this group is popularizing modern Colombian culture and music throughout the world. An acclaimed writer, Rita Indiana soon set her sights on the music world. In 2008, Indiana’s musical project, Miti Miti released the album Altar Epandex –which was declared by The New York Daily News as, “one of the top 5 indie jewels [of the year].” In 2009, she formed Rita Indiana y Los Misterios which debuted in 2010 with El Juidero, a fusion of raw, street-oriented "Dominicana" that blends punk, rock, reggae, electronic, and Afrocaribbean rhythms. Que Bajo?!, NYC’s acclaimed tropical dance party and its DJs are at the forefront of a global music scene that mixes the folkloric music of Latin America with modern electronica.

Jazz | Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble plays a jazz/hip-hop/R&B fusion


Musician/DJ/composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson with his world-class contemporary ensemble. Atwood-Ferguson’s performance embraces classic and contemporary jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, and features original music, covers of unreleased tracks by the late producer J Dilla, and a tribute to legendary blues artist and poet Gil Scott-Heron. Guest performers include jazz vocalist Jose James and hip-hop artist/emcee Pharoahe Monch. Singer/rapper Taylor McFerrin opens; J. Period is the evening’s DJ. In addition to the live music, concert guests enjoy food and hand-made products from local vendors, and an American Airlines raffle. Blankets only, no lawn chairs allowed.

Audiences will be dancing in the aisles at the ever-popular Seaside Swing Concert, featuring such golden chestnuts as In The Mood, It Don’t Mean A Thing, A Merengue, and I’ve Got You Under My Skin. The Danny Repole Swing Band. Bandleader Danny Repole's illustrious career includes performing in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Guy Lombardo Orchestra, at Radio City Music Hall, and on original Broadway cast recordings such as The Sound of Music, Cabaret, and Chicago. The band makes regular appearances at the Hotel Edison in New York City. Gates open at 7:00 p.m. so come early! Concert-goers can bring their own picnics, too.
