Slide Lecture | Suzanne Reisman discusses her book Off the (Beaten) Subway Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions

This illustrated talk will explore some of the unusual, out-of-the-way, or hidden-in-plain-sight places throughout the five boroughs that will give any roadside attraction a run for its gas money, as well as fun facts about the subway and the people (us!) who ride it. Ever since the automobile was invented, Americans have turned to their cars to get away. The "road trip" has grown over the years to almost mythic proportions, with people taking off to see all sorts of historic sites, crazy monuments, and buildings created to look like a giant duck or mortar and pestle. Since New Yorkers rely on public transportation and don't tend to own cars, we don't have the same opportunities to explore the mysteries of the side roads. However, it turns out that the ultimate "road trip" is the one taken on the subway tracks (or bus).

Concert | James Maddock, Roots Rocker

"Sunrise On Avenue C is very much a batch of unpretentious, tastefully arranged roots-rock songs, sung in an appealingly raspy croon. Most of the lyrics seem autobiographical, though there is a philosophical bent to “Straight Lines,” and “Dumbed Down” is a protest song of sorts, genially poking fun at reality TV." - The Star-Ledger
