Author Reading | Alexandra Horowitz reads from her book Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know

In this fascinating book, Alexandra Horowitz explores the world from the perspective of man’s best friend. By interweaving the science of dog cognition and perception with personal reflections on her own dog’s behavior, Horowitz discovers such things as whether dogs are able to smell sadness in humans and why some dogs relentlessly pursue bicycles or balls. Inside of a Dog gives anyone who lives with, deals with, or admires dogs a nuanced interpretation of their behavior and an appreciation of their canine minds. It turns out that “dogs know us better than we know them.” (Publishers’ Weekly). Bring a blanket for lawn seating (no chairs are allowed).

Book Discussion | Book Club: The Farthest Home Is in an Empire of Fire by John Phillip Santos

In this beautifully written, highly original work, John Phillip Santos creates a virtuosic meditation on ancestry and origins. Weaving together a poetic mix of family remembrance, personal odyssey, conquest history, and magical realism, Santos recounts his quest to find the missing chronicle of his mother's family, who arrived in southern Texas in the 1620s. As Santos traces their roots to northern Spain, he re-imagines the way we think about identity. The result is a uniquely engaging adventure in the frontier between self and family, past and present, at a time when breakthroughs in genetics are changing our window on history.

In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
