Performance | Work-in-Progress Performance: World of Wires

Working with a roster of regular collaborators, Jay Scheib joins forces with performers Sarita Choudhury, Mikéah Ernest Jennings, Jon Morris, Ayesha Ngaujah, Tanya Selvaratnam, Natalie Thomas, and designers Josh Higgason, Sara Brown, and Anouschka Trocker to develop World of Wires, the third and final installment of Scheib's science vs. fiction performance trilogy: Simulated Cities / Simulated Systems. Based loosely on Daniel Galouye's science fiction masterpiece Simulacron-3 and Fassbinder's sci-fi television series Welt am Draht, World of Wires chronicles the discovery of an immense computer simulation of the world—the people, the weather, the movement of markets, emotions, etc. When one of the scientists designing the simulation goes missing, her partner begins to investigate the disappearance. As her investigation spirals into chaos she discovers that she herself is part of the simulation she had been hired to design, and her colleague had simply been deleted. Scheib and his team will be developing World of Wires on Governors Island during the month of July. Join them as they present their progress during a 60-minute presentation.

Concert | Beach Party featuring Swirlies with Psychedelic Horseshit

Swirlies formed in 1990 in Boston/Cambridge, and quickly became notorious for their loud, wall-of-noise guitar music, as well as a twisted quiet side, which propelled them to the forefront of the city’s “chimp rock” scene, pitting dreamy, guitar-based pop against noisy, experimental tendencies. Often compared to My Bloody Valentine, the original band featured Damon Tutunjian (guitar/vox), Seana Carmody (guitar/vox), Andy Bernick (bass), and Ben Drucker (drums). Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Psychedelic Horseshit is rooted in lo-fi punk experimentation, and makes a dense, playful racket that veers between being challenging and genuinely catchy. Formed on a whim in 2005 after meeting at an “all night rave scene,” the band has kept a step ahead of the lo-fi noise pop scene they christened ‘shitgaze’ by drawing on a broad range of influences. Currently consisting of Matt Whitehurst (vocals / guitars / drum programming / harmonica / keyboards) and Ryan Jewell (drums / percussion / keyboards), the duo released it’s second proper LP titled Lace (FatCat Records, 2011), marking a major shift that includes upgrading their sound and delivering a coherent set of bustling, uptempo, hook-laden, melted outsider pop songs. FatCat proclaims the signing of Psychedelic Horseshit as on par with the label’s landing of Animal Collective and Black Dice, 8-years ago, viewing the band as similarly vital artists.

Concert | Brazilian Sounds: Marcelo D2 / Pitty / DJ Nuts

Celebrate the newest generation of musicians making a mark on the Brazilian music scene. Marcelo D2 (pictured) is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Latin hip-hop. From his beginnings fronting the popular Brazilian band, Planet Hemp to the international recognition gained during his solo career, this Rio de Janeiro native has been credited with creating a unique blend of traditional samba and hip-hop. His style consists of live latin loops, beats, samples and scratches that has landed him performances around the world alongside artists such as Stevie Wonder and Erykah Badu. You don’t need to speak Portuguese to appreciate this act - words might not always translate, but rhythm and passion certainly do. Pitty is one of the most successful Brazilian rock stars of her generation. Influenced by the sounds of rock greats such as The Beatles, Nirvana and Metallica, her strong, assertive voice accompanies her hard-hitting rock sound. Her solo debut, Admirável Chip Novo made her an instant star and was on heavy rotation on MTV Brazil. Her follow up albums Anacrônico and Chiaroscuro cemented her as a regular on all of Brazil’s major radio stations as well as garnering her the title of as one of the “100 Most Influential Brazilians in 2010,” by the Brazilian magazine Época. DJ Nuts is an astute and rigorous historian of Brazil’s vast and varied musical culture. Known for his legendary collection of music, he plays Brazilian classics and mixes it with the best of modern Brazilian music.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: As You Like It

Pulse Ensemble Theatre's seventh Harlem Summer Shakespeare production is a multi-ethnic, open-air production of William Shakespeare’s comedy. As is the tradition with Pulse Theatre Ensemble’s Harlem Summer Shakespeare, this production keeps Shakespeare’s language intact whilst updating the world in which the characters live. In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
