Dance Performance | Young Dancemakers Company, featuring Teen Performers from NYC Public Schools

Choreography created and performed by NYC teens selected from NYC public high schools. A company of 16 exuberant, ethnically diverse high school dancer/choreographers, under the watchful eye of director Alice Teirstein, will once again gather for the 16th year of Young Dancemakers Company, and perform their own works. Both themes and music are wide-ranging, usually covering subjects from love to war. In addition to their original dances, the group always learns a work by an established choreographer - Mark Morris, Merce Cunningham, and Bill T. Jones in past concerts. This year's participants are fortunate to learn and perform an excerpt from Jose Limon's "Psalm," taught by Mary Ford and Francisco Ruvalcaba. All performances end with the lively and popular "Dance With Us," in which audience members are invited onto the stage for some post-concert improvisation.

Author Reading | Jesse Ball reads from his book The Curfew

William and Molly lead a life of small pleasures, riddles at the kitchen table, and games of string and orange peels. All around them a city rages with war. When the uprising began, William's wife was taken, leaving him alone with their young daughter. They keep their heads down and try to remain unnoticed as police patrol the streets, enforcing a curfew and arresting citizens. But when an old friend seeks William out, claiming to know what happened to his wife, William must risk everything. He ventures out after dark, and young Molly is left to play, reconstructing his dangerous voyage, his past, and their future. An astounding portrait of fierce love within a world of random violence, The Curfew is a mesmerizing feat of literary imagination. Booklist says the book is written in "a spare yet merciful mode that brings Borges, Calvino, and Simic to mind." The author will be in conversation with Christopher Cox, Senior Editor at Harper's Magazine.
