Concert | Beach Party featuring The Raveonettes with Eternal Summers

Maintaining a cult fan base for as long as The Raveonettes (pictured) have – 10 years and counting – it was only a matter of time before some of the most-loyal of acolytes began branching out to make their own kinds of beautiful noise. The musical DNA of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo is evident – and credited – by the likes of The Drums, Best Coast, Vivian Girls, Dum Dum Girls, and the British bands The Vaccines and Glasvegas. NME.com went so far to declare the Danish duo as responsible for sparking “America’s pop renaissance.” Today, the Raveonettes are blazing a newer, darker trail with the latest release Raven In The Grave (Vice Records, 2011). Melody remains key, but the familiar bombastic beats and squalls of guitar-noise take a backseat to ghostly synths and chillingly beautiful riffs that leave one feeling simultaneously unsettled and enchanted. It’s easily the most soulful music the band has created to date. When Virginians Nicole Yun hooked up with Daniel Cundiff, they immediately knew they had the right musical chemistry, and what resulted was something very, very punk. They call it dream punk. Taut, hooky and often wide-open, their sound is simple but it takes up room. They employ the quietest quiets and the loudest louds-from hazy, clanging reveries to rapid No Wave squalls, calling to mind early indie legends like the Raincoats, Galaxie 500, Beat Happening, and Unrest.

Concert | World Sounds: Yemen Blues / Watcha Clan / Shabate / Awesome Tapes from Africa

Yemen Blues (pictured), a supergroup of top musicians founded by Ravid Kahalani and Omer Avital, is an original and fascinating meeting of traditional Yemenite melodies influenced by the world of blues, jazz and funk. The flavor of West African roots and enhanced modern compositions come together to create a breathtaking experience and mixture of complex grooves. Their unique sound is the powerful outcome of Kahalani’s musical journey from his Yemenite roots to western influences. Through its compelling mix of languages and musical styles, Watcha Clan is aspiring to be the sound of global society. With the 2011 release of their newest album, Radio Babel, Watcha Clan is poised to break down the barriers of what is considered “world” music. With a visionary eclecticism that incorporates everything from hip-hop to indigenous music, the band rolls out thriving, bass-heavy pulsations anchored by mesmerizing vocals. If you unite Ethiopian rhythms, traditional Jewish melodies and prayers with be-bop, it would probably sound something like Shabate. Playing their first-ever North American appearance, this culturally diverse band led by Abete Brihorn, interweaves African and middle eastern sounds with blues and funk underpinnings. Shabate is a merging of the secular and religious that will appeal to all audiences. Enjoy a danceable journey featuring the best of rare and obscure African music as Brian Shimkovitz DJs the music he shares through his famed MP3 blog, Awesome Tapes from Africa.

Concert | Bunnybrains: legacy of noise, anti-rock, and found sounds

"Inscrutable" isn't an inscrutable enough word to describe Bunnybrains' legacy of noise, anti-rock, and found sounds built over the past two decades. The band was once rumored to be so prolific in their avant-garde ramblings that they made a new cassette every week, recorded during rehearsal. Live, the group's audio quirks become visual, as frontcreep Dan Seward writhes about the stage doing things to his guitar that might not be legal in some states. Not for the faint of heart or closed of mind. " Kory Grow ..Village Voice 2010

Screening | 2 Short Films: Saint Louis Blues / Festival in the Desert: The Tent Sessions

Saint Louis Blues, 48 min., 2009 (Senegal / France) directed by Dyana Gaye. At a taxi stop in the capital, Dakar, people gather and wait for the battered old Peugeot station wagon to depart; the taxi won't leave until the driver finds a seventh passenger. Along the journey from Dakar to Saint Louis, the passengers of the taxi meet each other’s destiny and tell their lives through songs. Festival in the Desert: The Tent Sessions, 42 min., 2003 (Mali / United States), directed by Sean Barlow and Banning Eyre. An intimate performance documentary about the 2003 festival featuring Ali Farka Touré, Tartit, Robert Plant and Justin Adams, a host of exquisite musicians playing astounding music---and plenty of camels! Held outside Timbuktu, the festival was initially conceived as a way for the nomadic Tuareg people to unite with their brethren who had been dispersed by political upheaval. From magnificent camel riders to enchanted lantern-lit sand dunes, this film captures the sights and sounds of the event so well that it is the next best thing to making the arduous journey yourself.

Concert | Gospel & R&B: Mavis Staples / The Relatives

A pinnacle of gospel, rhythm and blues and soul for decades, Mavis Staples has built a stupendously varied career from the roots of her chart-topping family band, the Staples Singers. Beginning her rise as the voice of the civil rights movement, she continues to take that much-needed message to the masses. The Relatives hail from Dallas, where lead gospel shouter Rev. Gean West walked the redemptive path to stirringly psychedelic righteousness. They resurrect their singular brand of gutbucket gospel funk for their first-ever New York performance.

Dance Performance | Young Dancemakers Company, featuring Teen Performers from NYC Public Schools

Choreography created and performed by NYC teens selected from NYC public high schools. A company of 16 exuberant, ethnically diverse high school dancer/choreographers, under the watchful eye of director Alice Teirstein, will once again gather for the 16th year of Young Dancemakers Company, and perform their own works. Both themes and music are wide-ranging, usually covering subjects from love to war. In addition to their original dances, the group always learns a work by an established choreographer - Mark Morris, Merce Cunningham, and Bill T. Jones in past concerts. This year's participants are fortunate to learn and perform an excerpt from Jose Limon's "Psalm," taught by Mary Ford and Francisco Ruvalcaba. All performances end with the lively and popular "Dance With Us," in which audience members are invited onto the stage for some post-concert improvisation.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: As You Like It

Pulse Ensemble Theatre's seventh Harlem Summer Shakespeare production is a multi-ethnic, open-air production of William Shakespeare’s comedy. As is the tradition with Pulse Theatre Ensemble’s Harlem Summer Shakespeare, this production keeps Shakespeare’s language intact whilst updating the world in which the characters live. In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
