Discussion | “What Talk Will Bear”: A Discussion

Whether for companionship, religious congress, protest, eating, or comfort, sitting communally remains one of the most powerful and prevalent of human social activities. This simple act held special significance in numerous intentional communities that emerged in nineteenth-century America, and was given physical presence in the form of a variety of styles of wooden benches. Francis Cape's project Utopian Benches consists of a book, We Sit Together: Utopian Benches From The Shakers To The Separatists Of Zoar (published by Princeton Architectural Press), and a group of benches which Cape has fabricated according to the original plans of various utopian communities. For the exhibition, seventeen of Cape's benches are gathered together in the gallery, inviting visitors to sit together and to consider how material culture reflects social structures and values. During the course of the exhibition, the gallery will host a program of open discussions — following a format established by the Quakers — around a range of topics pertinent to the project, beginning with a discussion led by Robert Hullot-Kentor. A distinguished scholar, writer, and translator, Hullot-Kentor is chair of the MA program in Critical Theory and the Arts at the School of Visual Arts, New York. He will lead a conversation on "What Talk Will Bear" — "bear" in the sense both of tolerate and carry.

Dance Performance | Wally Cardona & Jennifer Lacey perform The Set Up: Jean-Christophe Paré

Initiated in 2012, The Set Up is a multi-year project devised by choreographer Wally Cardona, made in unique cooperation with choreographer Jennifer Lacey and an international assembly of dance-artists viewed as “masters” of their form, operating in their own culturally informed aesthetic. Each Set Up begins with an invitation to one master artist to teach what they think is most important about the form to which they have devoted their lives. It continues with a response period, a final stage of reflection, and the making of “a dance.” The entire process happens in the layers of superficiality and depth inherent in the assumption of the universality of dance.

Opening Reception | Fame, Photographic Portraits of Famous Men and Women

Portraiture has a lengthy, rich, and diverse history in art. In our era, portraits of the famous have a pleasant association: they are familiar and frequently serve as cultural and temporal markers. These portraits, though, can be enigmatic, showing recognized faces but only hinting at complex personalities and the quixotic flow of fortune and tragedy. An effort has been made to exhibit images that are not well known (and some have, in fact, never been printed or publicly shown), in a bid to add something unexpected to what is otherwise familiar. Opening Reception | Eddie Martinez's Paper Variables 2013, Works in Handmade Paper

This playful, cartoonish, and abstract series is comprised of a few basic compositions that each feature a handful of repeating forms. By working quickly and on several pieces simultaneously, the artist was able to explore variation within his themes through different combinations of color, form, embellishments, and positive and negative space. The resulting body of work captures the quick, gestural process which is common in the artist's large scale paintings.

Folk Devi brings together a diverse group of international artists. The exhibition’s title is a reference to sociologist Stanley Cohen’s description of the British media’s hostile reaction towards deviant youth groups in the 1960s, and embodies a deep-rooted fear of subcultures and the morally aberrant. Folk Devil presents a comment on the tendency to create artificial connections between a group of individuals, while it also contains a self-referential statement on the yearly summer shows held at many art galleries under various umbrella themes.

Concert | Latin Sounds: Lila Downs / Natalia Clavier / Pamela Rodriguez / Raul Campos

Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, Lila Downs embraces and highlights her origins in the U.S. and Mexico. Downs’ roots have always been an important aspect of her music, as well as the topics of political and social justice, immigration, and transformation, all embedded in the human condition. For over a decade, Lila Downs has traversed the planet, bringing her dramatic and highly unique reinvention of traditional Mexican music and original compositions fused with Blues, Jazz, Soul, and African roots. Known as the long-time live voice of Thievery Corporation, Natalia Clavier’s new solo album, Lumen was produced by Adrian Quesada. With a sultry mix of Jazz-inspired vocals, electronic textures and global influences, Lumen further develops the sound Clavier cultivated while recording and touring with both Thievery Corporation and her husband, Argentinean singer-songwriter Federico Aubele. Born and raised in Lima, Pamela Rodriguez has always been enticed by other paths of life, territories and cities. In her lyrics, Rodriguez intertwines topics of love and indifference with her own experiences to create melodies out of feminine intuition and the instinctive need to interpret reality through a song. The voice of pirate radio in the mid-90s and a native Angeleno, Raul Campos has come from the underground to represent the eclectic airwaves of KCRW in Los Angeles. Campos brings his audience to a place where funky beats, underground rhythms, heartbroken guitars, Latin-loving and daring melodies live.

Concert | Rock & Roll: Generationals / Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside / Waxahatchee

New Orleans’ Generationals have established themselves as the go-to band for sunny pop songs influenced by music of the British Invasion, Soul Stax and Wall of Sound production. Like a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and Tom Waits, Sallie Ford has established herself as one of the most powerful female voices in indie rock, mining that sweet spot between modern and vintage. On their new album, Untamed Beast, the band creates a powerful statement on finding freedom through defying conformity. According to Sallie: ”rock n roll isn’t a genre, its energy.”

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: Cymbeline, Presented by The Drilling Company

Cymbeline has a complex, not a simple narrative, and is sometimes classified as a problem play because it is part history, part tragedy and part comedy. The marriage of Imogen and Posthumus is tested in the context of a rebellion of the Britons against the Roman Empire. Shows are offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. It's all part of the fun.
