Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Concert | Latin Sounds: Compass / Systema Solar / Helado Negro

Compass - Together, Camilo Lara and Toy Selectah are known as Compass. Camilo Lara is the founder of Mexican Institute of Sound and has released 4 albums since its formation in early 2000. His music is a visionary mixture that flirts with electronic, hip-hop, dub, cumbia and punk. M.I.S. has performed at such major music festivals as Coachella, Lollapalooza and Roskilde. Systema Solar - Colombian audio-visual collective Systema Solar salvages stories and sounds from the country’s rich cultural history and jacks them up with space-aged beats, colorful videos, and power-to-the-people stands. The seven members live in four different cities, doing much of their work over the internet – not an easy feat in Colombia – and improvising most of their lives performances due to a lack of rehearsal time. Helado Negro - A South Florida native, born to Ecuadorian immigrants and based in Brooklyn, Helado Negro aka Roberto Carlos Lange’s upbringing provides essential elements to his songwriting, including his consistently bilingual – English and Spanish – lyrics. While citing the influence of the electro and Miami-bass he heard on the radio in his youth, his diverse work as Helado Negro points to shades of kraut rock bathed in his mesmerizing rhythms, loops, and hair-raising melodies.

Slide Lecture | What Is New Is Old: A History of The New School

A lecture and slideshow with Julia Foulkes, Associate Professor of History, The New School. In 1919, the New School for Social Research opened with courses in the social sciences, social work, and public affairs in New York “because it is the greatest social science laboratory in the world.” The school was not quite a university: it did not offer formal degrees. The founders thought that people would come to the school for “no other purpose than to learn.” It sought to make education relevant to the issues of the day, to remain ever new. Nearly 100 years later, the school is now a multi-faceted university and a hub in the political, intellectual, and cultural life of New York City and Greenwich Village. This event will be dedicated to commemorating the dynamic history of The New School and the Greenwich Village neighborhood where it resides.

Film | Argentine Cinema: Jorge Gaggero's Live-In Maid (2005)

Norma Aleandro, the grande dame of Argentine cinema (think Meryl Streep crossed with Penelope Cruz) plays a still-elegant haute-bourgeois divorcée, living in a fashionable Buenos Aires apartment, surrounded by a lifetime of consumer goods, but with little cash. Her maid of 30 years massages her feet and freshens her drinks — but makes moves to abandon this sinking ship when the going gets tough. This is a wonderful comedy of class consciousness and codependency that easily and subtly crosses cultural boundaries. 83 minutes. Film starts at dusk. PRE-SCREENING PERFORMANCE at 7pm: Adam Tully Trio - Adam Tully’s skills as a guitarist, arranger, and composer are equaled by his experience and credentials in the world of Latin American music. Hailed for the “remarkable versatility and ease with which he negotiates styles from Bach to flamenco,” Adam is respected as a concert soloist, and considered a valuable collaborator by his fellow musicians in the realm of Argentine Tango.

City Walk | Brooklyn Bridge Ghost Tour

An icon of New York City and one of the world's most famous man-made structures, the bridge is must-see attraction on most visitors’ Big Apple itineraries. A walk along its pedestrian promenade, with its wonderful views of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Brooklyn—not to mention the bridge's Gothic arched towers—is priceless. It truly lives up to its nickname as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Yet behind all its physical beauty and charm lie darker truths. The bridge has been bad luck for some and a curse for others. Mysterious illness to a stampede to faulty construction and outright murder have claimed the lives of dozens, including the bridge's designers.
