You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. Fishing in New York City? You bet! Each summer, Big City Fishing offers a free program, to those as young as five who are eager to learn both how to fish and about the Hudson River environment. They provide the rods, reels, bait and instruction. Beyond teaching fishing, the program also provides participants with a first-hand opportunity to learn about river ecology and the many fish species that can be found in the river. Participants can drop in a line and relax, or engage with environmental educators on such topics such as water quality, fish biology and more. Help NYPL build the geospatial library of the future! This workshop will get you oriented with the set of tools the Library has developed that enables librarians and the general public to add valuable geographic context to old maps by overlaying digital images of historical maps onto a contemporary digital map through a process called georectification, or "warping" maps. This means overlaying digital images of historic maps onto a contemporary digital map (similar to Google Maps), transforming them into tiles of a virtual atlas.

Concert | Lowdown Hudson Music Fest


With: O.A.R. – Formed in 1996 in Rockville, Maryland, O.A.R. (an acronym for Of a Revolution) enjoyed a quick rise from college campus favorites to Billboard chart-toppers and international stars. Renowned for their vibrant live shows and the communal relationship they share with their fans, the band have performed their roots-rock and reggae-inflected songs to audiences around the world, including two sold out shows at Madison Square Garden. They recently returned to their hometown for their eighth studio album, The Rockville LP, a journey of creative renewal and inspiration. Ryan Bingham – is a celebrated Americana singer-songwriter who first captured worldwide attention for his collaboration with producer T Bone Burnett on the soundtrack for the 2009 acclaimed film Crazy Heart, including co-writing & performing the film’s award-winning theme song “The Weary Kind”. The title track earned Bingham an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Critics’ Choice Award for “Best Song” in 2010, as well as a Grammy Award for “Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media” in 2011. Bingham released his fifth studio album “Fear and Saturday Night” on January 20, 2015.

Meena Alexander’s collections of poetry include Birthplace with Buried Stones (2013), Quickly Changing River (2008) Raw Silk (2004) and Illiterate Heart (2002), the winner of a 2002 PEN Open Book Award. She lives and works in New York City, where she is Distinguished Professor of English at Hunter College and at the CUNY Graduate Center in the PhD program in English. Ross Gay is the author of three collections of poetry: Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude (2015), Bringing the Shovel Down (2011), and Against Which (2006). He currently teaches at Indiana University and in Drew University’s Low-Residency MFA program in Poetry and Poetry in Translation. January Gil O’Neil is the author of Misery Islands (2014) and Underlife (2009). She is executive director of the Massachusetts Poetry Festival and teaches at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts.

For her performance, Benitez will engage park visitors in a series of three interrelated vignettes that weave through the park along paths choreographed in signs. The three chapters of her performance will unfold at three distinct locations in the park, reacting to each site individually. An extension of her previous work with both formal and informal sign languages, Benitez’s performance will bring together a new group of collaborators in a melding of sign languages and contact improvisation, including performers with a background in ASL jamming and deaf poetry circles.
