Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Concert | Bandits on the Run, Whimsical Pop Rockers

Bandits on the Run is a group of whimsical criminals that sound like a nostalgic medley of old and new: strummed, plucked, and bowed away on cello and nylon string guitar, and propped up on an old timey spine of three part harmony. Their tools are various and sundry, a motley mix of off-beat pop music covers, reworked jazz and rock standards, and originals that’ll make you feel like deja vu all over again. At the center of this dangerous crime ring are Roy Dodger, guitar and vocals (a.k.a. Adrian Enscoe); Bonanza Jellyfish, cello and vocals (a.k.a. Sydney Shepherd); and “Clarissa,” percussion and vocals (a.k.a. Regina Strayhorn).

Concert | Indie Pop: The Family Crest / Arc Iris

The brainchild of Liam McCormick, The Family Crest was started as a recording project in 2009 with co-founder John Seeterlin (bass) to reinvent how music could be created. Now a seven-piece core band, boasting over 400 “Extended Family” members, The Family Crest infuses pop into complex arrangements from dark, classical romanticism to horn-laden sounds akin to the Roaring 20′s. Arc Iris crystallizes the evolution of composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Jocie Adams, a former core member of renowned indie-folk band The Low Anthem. This is a breakaway moment for Adams, who now takes center stage as composer, lyricist, and lead vocalist. Embracing her new role as auteur, Adams has created a genre-bending style that often shifts between cabaret-infused jazz, orchestral sophistication, grimy outlaw country, delicate and whimsical harmonies, and big-band exhilaration — sometimes all in the same song.

Concert | Lowdown Hudson Music Fest

With: The Wood Brothers – Chris and Oliver wood spent fifteen years separately pursuing successful music careers before they formed The Wood Brothers: Chris as a founding member of genre-busting jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood while Oliver immersed himself in the Southern Rock scene working with Tinsley Ellis and King Johnson. NPR described their first album as a collection of “gracious little songs [that] sound like they were born on a front porch during a beautiful sunset.” Their music combines blues, folk, and roots-music styles they loved as kids into their own evocative sound, with their voices united in the kind of high-lonesome harmony blend for which sibling singers are often renowned. On their latest album, The Muse, Oliver’s gritty acoustic guitar and Chris’s virtuosic upright bass are joined by multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix. The Word – The Word is an improvisational rock-gospel supergroup featuring pedal-steel guitarist Robert Randolph, keyboardist John Medeski, and all three members of the North Mississippi Allstars (guitarist Luther Dickinson, drummer Cody Dickinson and bassist Chris Chew). The band came together in 2000, bonding over their mutual love for Sacred Steel, a tradition of gospel music that originated in African-American Pentecostal churches in the early 20th century. Since the release of their first LP in 2001, all five members have remained busy with projects outside of the band while occasionally uniting for live shows, including high-profile performances at Bonnaroo in 2005 and 2012. May 4 marked the release of their second studio album, Soul Food, on Vanguard Records.

Author Reading | Louis Masur reads from his book Lincoln’s Last Speech: Wartime Reconstruction and the Crisis of Reunion

What did Abraham Lincoln envision when he talked about "reconstruction?" Assassinated in 1865, the president did not have a chance to begin the work of reconciling the North and South, nor to oversee Reconstruction as an official postwar strategy. Yet his final speech, given to thousands gathered in the rain outside the White House on April 11, 1865, gives a clear indication of what Lincoln's postwar policy might have looked like-one that differed starkly from what would emerge in the tumultuous decade that followed.

City Walk | Brooklyn Bridge Ghost Tour

An icon of New York City and one of the world's most famous man-made structures, the bridge is must-see attraction on most visitors’ Big Apple itineraries. A walk along its pedestrian promenade, with its wonderful views of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Brooklyn—not to mention the bridge's Gothic arched towers—is priceless. It truly lives up to its nickname as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Yet behind all its physical beauty and charm lie darker truths. The bridge has been bad luck for some and a curse for others. Mysterious illness to a stampede to faulty construction and outright murder have claimed the lives of dozens, including the bridge's designers.
