Concert | Eclectic Sounds: Bombino / Young Fathers / Fantastic Negrito

Bombino - Born and raised in Niger, Omara “Bombino” Moctar is a member of the Tuareg Ifoghas tribe, which for centuries has fought against colonialism and the imposition of strict Islamic rule. During his lifetime, the Tuareg people have fought the Niger government to secure their rights on numerous occasions, causing Bombino and his family to flee several times. In exile, Bombino picked up the guitar and studied videos of Jimi Hendrix and Mark Knopfler in an effort to master their licks. Young Fathers - Young Fathers is ‘G’ Hastings, Alloysious Massaquoi and Kayus Bankole. The three men are each named after their fathers – a unifying bond for a band that pushes against the binds of definition. They are rock and pop, hip hop and punk, and anything else you want to label them as. But really, they are none and all of these. Fantastic Negrito - Fantastic Negrito is a man’s truth told in the form of black roots music. Each song is a true story about a musician from Oakland who experienced the highs of a million dollar record deal, the lows of a near fatal car accident that put him in a coma, and is now in the phase of rebirth despite his playing hand being mangled. Negrito’s music emphasizes rawness and space. Slide guitar, drums, piano.

Concert | Pop Sounds: Sylvan Esso / Porches

Obliterating dubstep stutters and crisp electropop pulses. Hazy electrostatic breezes and epinephrine dancefloor turnarounds. SYLVAN ESSO — the singer Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and the producer (and Megafaun bassist) Nick Sanborn — create “endlessly elastic and three-dimensional” (NPR) songs that conjure up dreamlike conflations of sensuality and sexual depravity, homesickness and wanderlust, nostalgia and immediacy. The duo came together in Durham, NC in 2013 after the two met on a shared bill and Meath asked Sanborn to remix a song she had written for Mountain Man. Aesthetic sympathies were discovered, artistic sparks flew, and the resulting self-titled debut record, released on Partisan Records in May of 2014, made them one of the fastest rising bands of last year. The leap from small clubs to festival stages may have been been swift but it’s also seamless — their sound is huge, and their live show is a celebratory revelation. The prolific songwriter Aaron Maine’s PORCHES has mined darker and weirder sonic territory in the past, but its latest incarnation — a lineup that includes Greta Kline of Frankie Cosmos — makes “danceable, shimmery pop with rock instruments (keyboards too), in an '80s-sorta way.” (Brooklyn Vegan)

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: As You Like it

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden.
