Beach Fossils began in 2009 as the solo project of Dustin Payseur. Lecture | Up!: Manhood, Democratic Medicine, and Walt Whitman's Secret Health Writings


In 1858, Walt Whitman published under a pseudonym a series of articles comprising a book-length manifesto, more "Manly Health and Training," which appeared serially in The New York Atlas, on diet, exercise, and the future of American health. The series came out at a critical juncture in US history, and this newly rediscovered series encapsulates many of the great debates that helped define the health sciences, then and now. It also offers a rare glimpse into a "lost" year in the life of Walt Whitman. Whitman's authorship of the series was uncovered by Zachary Turpin, a doctoral candidate in English at the University of Houston, and his talk will explore his recovery of the series, and its place in Whitman's life's work. It will be followed by a discussion with Isaac Gewirtz, Curator of the Berg Collection, followed by Q&A with the audience. less

Slide Lecture | Songs from a Lost World: Singing as Resistance and Renewal in New York, 1948


In 1948, only three years after the war, Ben Stonehill recorded over a thousand songs from Holocaust more survivors temporarily housed in a hotel in upper Manhattan. In this presentation, sociolinguist and Yiddish scholar Dr. Miriam Isaacs will explore the meaning of that archive and discuss what these songs tell us about the inner world of refugees and survivors. Many of these songs are rare, some written in the camps or by partisans. Among the most important of the singers was Shmerke Kaczerginski, a partisan and poet and the collector and an actress, Diana Blumenfeld. Dr. Isaacs will play cuts of the original songs, sung by men, women and children, mainly in Yiddish, but also Russian and Hebrew. Collectively, this body of song constitutes a haunting testimony to survivors’ resilience, courage and humor. less
