Talk | Vincent Livelli: The Greenwich Village Raconteur

A special presentation by the storyteller of eras past, Vincent Livelli. Ten years ago, at 87, Livelli launched Salsa Livelli, a blog captivating his audience with memories of the nightlife and culture of Greenwich Village and beyond. As a toddler on Sullivan Street, Livelli consumed paint chips that later resulted in brain damage and hearing impairment from lead poisoning. That didn’t stop him from attending multiple universities, mastering various languages, becoming an entertainment director on more than 80 cruise ship voyages around the world, becoming a gran rumbero and an expert of La Musica Cubana; all while suffering from hearing loss. A pivotal aspect of Livelli’s Greenwich Village life was his friendship with Anatole Broyard, New York Times Literary Critic, who he met while attending Brooklyn College. Livelli and Broyard had an instant connection. They opened a bookstore on Cornelia Street and established a center of intellectual life at the San Remo cafe on Bleecker and MacDougal Streets. As a grand voyager, Livelli met, hosted and entertained countless celebrities, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Anais Nin, Orson Welles, Marjorie Merriweather Post, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sullivan and Carmen Miranda. Vincent Livelli is now 97 and still occupies the very Perry St. apartment he left for months at a time while at sea. His life experiences include equal parts Greenwich Village and life as a global circumnavigator. Livelli is still a valuable source of historical information and enjoys sharing his robust historical perspective. A rare digital presentation is being provided by Henry Medina Jr., private researcher of Latin music and dance, has interviewed and filmed Vincent Livelli for almost 25 years. Mr. Medina has documented the unique life of Livelli as part of his ongoing oral history project. This valuable footage includes Livelli’s close association with Anatole Broyard and the 1946 Cornelia Street Bookstore, cherished memories of the San Remo (1938-1964), a local social club that became their literary salon.

Workshop | Critical Fictions & Reimagining Citizenship: talks by Architect & Designers

3pm-4pm “Critical Fictions: Dystopian and Utopian Narratives of the City” with Marcus Wilford (Architect & Designer) Inspired by Italo Calvino's novel "Invisible Cities", Critical Fictions presents speculative projects with various narratives inspired by distopian and utopian scenarios that are based on real world conditions including economic inequality, rapid urbanization, war, ecological sustainability, capitalism and communism. 4pm-5pm “Reimagining Citizenship: Challenging Traditional Notions of Citizenship through Counter-narratives” with Katherine Fisher (Designer, Studio Basis) and Valentina Branada (The New School). With the vibrant political landscape today, new civic actions have become more visible and are mobilizing the entire world. This landscape reflects society’s need to be heard, for a diversity of voices to be accounted for, and highlights the problem of inequality in institutional politics and representation today. The workshop provides frameworks and creates an environment for individual voices to surface, to investigate diverse perspectives, and create media artifacts that question the status quo of ownership in narratives to generate a shared sense of purpose.

Concert | Latin Sounds: Totó La Momposina / Mariachi Flor de Toloache

Long-awaited NYC return of Colombia’s Latin-Grammy Queen of cumbia, chadé, bullerengue, mapalé & porro with NYC’s first all-female mariachi band Sonia Bazanta Vides, well known by her lavish stage name, Totó La Momposina, has spent her life cheerfully spreading the native music of Colombia’s Caribbean coastline. She was raised on an island off the coast, called Mompox (this is where she derived the “Momposina” of her moniker). A place where African, Indigenous Indian and Spanish cultures mingle, the resulting musical potpourri there is resplendently diverse, and has informed Vides’ vast work (herself of Afro-Colombian and Indigenous descent). Latin Grammy nominees Mariachi Flor de Toloache make New York City history as its’ first and only all-women mariachi group. Founded in 2008, Mariachi Flor de Toloache is led by singers Mireya I. Ramos (founder) and Shae Fiol (original member). Reminiscent of the early days of mariachi the group started as a trio with harp, violin and vihuela. Today, they perform as a full Mariachi ensemble. The members hail from diverse cultural backgrounds such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy and the U.S.
