These fantastic one-woman shows celebrate strong women in two completely different ways. Cathay: Black women in the 1860’s American South bore enough of a burden just living within strictly defined female social roles, let alone choosing their own career paths. Cathay Williams, the daughter of a slave woman from Independence, Missouri, knows she's meant for something different. When the United States Army liberates her town, she realizes her destiny is to be a soldier. She's going to enlist in the United States regular army as a Buffalo Soldier, and nothing's going to stop her from making her own road by whatever means necessary. In this one-woman show, we present the story of Venus and Adonis, using only Shakespeare’s text from his little-known poem about what happens when Venus, the goddess of love, faces rejection. In telling her story of unrequited love and inevitable loss, we see a powerful goddess, reduced to a vulnerable, insecure, and heart-broken woman. A story anyone who has loved and lost can relate to.
