Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Author Reading | The Revolution Of 28'

Author Robert Chiles explores the career of New York governor and 1928 Democratic presidential nominee Alfred E. Smith, peering into Smith's work and uncovers a distinctive strain of American progressivism that resonated among urban, ethnic, working-class Americans in the early twentieth century. Chiles charts the rise of that idiomatic progressivism during Smith's early years as a state legislator through his time as governor of the Empire State in the 1920s, before proceeding to a revisionist narrative of the 1928 presidential campaign, exploring the ways in which Smith's gubernatorial progressivism was presented to a national audience. Robert Chiles has published pieces in popular and scholarly publications including Newsday, The Washington Post, The Albany Times Union, Environmental History, The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, New York History, and North Dakota History; and in 2019 he became an editor of the New York History journal.

Discussion | Brands as Landmarks

Landmarks, until very recently, were essential to urban navigation. The role of the landmark has changed dramatically now that people can carry the planet in their pocket. Iconic landmarks like Trinity Church and the Chrysler Building now compete for eyeballs not only with the traffic, signage and bustle of the city around them, but with a steady stream of emails, app notifications and breaking news alerts. We look for the Flatiron Building when we need to post to the 'gram, not when we need to figure out where we're going. While the way that people relate to the physical world around them is evolving, this also creates new opportunities for place-based brands looking to catch people's attention, raise awareness and increase engagement. Join ThoughtMatter's director of content, Brendan Crain, for a talk and discussion about how brands can use messaging and visual identity to stand out in a crowded city. Poetry Reading | No Matter: Visionary Poems

Jana Prikryl's urgent, visionary collection of poems guides the reader through cities—remembered and imagined—toppling past the point of decline and fall. Conjured by voices alternately ardent, caustic, grieving, but always watchful, these soliloquies move from free verse through sonnets and invented forms, insisting that every demolition builds something new and unforeseen. In reactionary times, these poems say, we each have a responsibility to use our imagination.

Dance Performance | Sensation 1/This Interior: A Work for Six Dancers

Ligia Lewis works as a choreographer and dancer. Her affectively charged choreographies move across the fields of dance, theater, and visual art. Troubling the stage and the body as sites of stable representation, Lewis unsettles their edges by inviting frictions and ruptures into her creative process. Lewis expands her solo work Sensation 1 into an hour-long performance for six dancers. The figure of a vocalist who holds her concluding note forms the basis for Sensation 1/This Interior. Lewis stretches this climatic moment into a sustained articulation of feeling and affect across multiple bodies. An ecstatic choreographed form emerges, dissolving the singular gesture of the iconic pop diva into a collective experience.
