Classical Music | Bach at Noon

The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 11, 2018 to May 22, 2019.

Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Author Reading | Savage Feast: Family Memoir Through Recipes

Beginning with novelist Boris Fishman’s roots in Soviet Belarus, Savage Feast is a bold family memoir told through meals and recipes. It describes how years of Holocaust hunger left his grandmother so obsessed with bread that she always kept five loaves on hand. After his family’s emigration to the U.S., the cooking of his grandfather's Ukrainian home aide, Oksana, sends Fishman on a quest to re-connect with his past, which takes him to the lettuce beds on a farm in the Hudson Valley, the prep line in a Russian restaurant on the Lower East Side, and a Native American reservation in South Dakota before he finds his way back to Brooklyn.  With contributions from Ruth Reichl, Éric Ripert, Joan Nathan, Yotam Ottolenghi, and Dr. Ruth Westehimer,  Tablet Magazine’s 100 Most Jewish Foods, edited by Tablet’s founder and editor-in-chief Alana Newhouse, is a list of neither the most popular Jewish foods nor the tastiest (jellied calves’ feet, anyone?), but the most significant, culturally and historically. It goes without saying, you’re expected to disagree. Boris Fishman and Alana Newhouse will have a wide-ranging conversation about food as the connection to history, identity, belonging, family, and love and how to write about it. Boris Fishman's novel A Replacement Life won the American Library Association's Sophie Brody Medal and was a New York Times Notable Book, and his journalism has appeared in The New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal, among other publications. Newhouse is the founder and editor-in-chief of Tablet magazine.

The paintings in this exhibition—all made between 2005–2016—bring the mask as a motif into his painted works and combine with them abstracted grid elements that reference in part back to his earlier chalk-line paintings of the 1970s.

Concert | NPR Music’s Turning the Tables Live: The Motherlode

Turning the Tables—the ongoing partnership between NPR Music that seeks to reframe the popular music canon to honor unacknowledged voices—returns. This year, they explore the work of female artists who originated and shaped recorded music from its earliest days to the 1960s, in jazz, blues, gospel, classical, and Latinx music. Tonight’s performance, The Motherlode, celebrates the musical contributions of eight women—their names revealed at the show—whose towering contributions shaped the paths of all who followed. Selecting from the rich songbooks of these artists will be an outstanding group of contemporary performers, including Rhiannon Giddens, Xiomara Laugart, Ledisi, Amina Claudine Myers, Cleo Reed, Valerie Simpson, Charenée Wade, and Lizz Wright, under the musical direction of multiple Grammy Award–winner and two-time Turning the Tables honoree Terri Lyne Carrington.
