Opening Reception | Urban Narratives: Havana to New York in Water-Colors

John Connors' paintings of old Havana are inspired by the energy and vitality of the centuries old streets and squares, and the bustling activity of its citizens. As a street painter he is interested in architecture as evidence of the layers of time, and how Havana's glories and wealth of the past are adapted to the current everyday life of its people. In this exhibition he has also included some New York views. As a New Yorker Connors felt very in sync with the liveliness and enthusiasm of Havana's street life and the humor and drama of its citizens. ** The event is open to those who are fully vaccinated and to those who can show a recent negative Covid-19 test. Face-coverings are optional. **

Opera | Met Opera: Strauss' Elektra (virtual, streaming for 23 hrs)

Elektra is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. While based on ancient Greek mythology and Sophocles' tragedy Electra, the opera is highly modernist and expressionist in style. It received its UK premiere at the Royal Opera House in 1910. The opera made its premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1932. This 2016 recording features Nina Stemme who gives a heart-wrenching performance in the title role. Patrice Chereau's acclaimed production--the last staging he worked on before his death in 2013--also stars Waltraud Meier as Klytamnestra, Elektra's nightmare-haunted mother, Adrianne Pieczonka as Chrysothemis, her sister, and Eric Owens as Orest, their brother, whose return home brings their family story to a terrifying climax. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the monumental and highly influential score.
