Open Studios | Open Studios

"I see both ideas of History and Future as malleable. Both can be imagined. Both can be fabricated. Both are speculative. In that process of re-imagining, I am able to ask questions about the nature of reality and the notion of time. I am interested in visual-spatial storytelling as a strategic tool to imagine historical narratives through contemporary lens. These re-imagined narratives are constructed out of very real social, political or cultural histories that is fictionalized to make an epistemological shift. My works strive to live in that crevice created by that shift." -- Artist Jagrut Raval

Performance | Seeds of Hope: Performance Art

Hope shapes our future and lifts us up. It allows us to access peace and catalyzes resounding change. Hope is what revolutions are built upon. This installation is a tribute to hope, drawing inspiration from Thai culture, where wishes and prayers are often tied to trees, an acknowledgement that an individual has asked something of the universe. Seeds of Hope encourages participants to share a vision for the future on shades of gold ribbon—which are then tied around the rows of plane trees on Hearst Plaza. In essence, we seed hopes and dreams, planting a flag of aspirations that may serve as bright beacons of change. It has often been said that hope is a “thing with feathers.” In this installation, we see the hope of thousands flutter softly in the wind.   Featuring musical accompaniment by Brooklyn Raga Massive, an artist collective dedicated to creating cross-cultural understanding through the lens of South Asian classical music.

Concert | Cabaret Pop and a Grammy-Winning String Ensemble

Patrick Watson is both a man and the eponymous band, led by the Montreal singer-songwriter whose blend of morose cabaret pop and indie rock can run the gamut from spare and quiet to cinematic and orchestral. His third album Close to Paradise won the 2007 Polaris Music Prize, awarded to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. For this performance, Watson will be accompanied by the Grammy Award-winning string ensemble Attacca Quartet and the Inuk singer-songwriter and activist Elisapie, who sings in English, French, and Inuktitut. Her 2018 album The Ballad of the Runaway Girl explores her journey into womanhood, her adoption, her Inuit nomadic culture and the trauma colonialism left in her community, while drawing from the poetry and sensibility of her Inuit heritage. Opener La Force has collaborated with the likes of Watson as well as Big Red Machine and Canadian indie rock royalty Feist and Broken Social Scene. The music of La Force is nocturnal electronic pop, featuring Engle's enchanting vocals over dynamic production.

Tony Award nominee Robert O’Hara (Slave Play, The Public’s Barbecue) brings his sharp wit and storytelling genius with a bold new production of Richard III. One of Shakespeare’s most indelible villains, Richard is determined to be King. Following his lust for power and the throne, he manipulates, kidnaps, and kills all who stand between him and his throne, using brilliant words and dark charm to conceal his dismantling of government and justice.
