Discussion | Artist Talk: The Observing Heart

Acclaimed artist and activist Mary Frank has been making art in her Manhattan and Hudson Valley studios for over sixty years. During her formative years she made semi-abstract figures carved from wood and plaster. A shift to clay in the late sixties was a revelation as she discovered an improvisatory process. In the early ’70s she broke into public view with distinctive clay sculptures of the female form. Since then, she has made work in a broad range of media including sculptures in clay, cast bronze, and plaster along with paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs. Her work is powerfully, if obliquely narrative and has always centered on the twin themes of social justice and the preservation of the natural world.

Discussion | Jewish Immigration

Between 1820 and 1924, there was a large influx of Jewish immigrants to the United States from Eastern and Central Europe. They were escaping oppressive laws that many parts of Europe passed that targeted Jews, along with increased violence from pogroms and riots. These immigrants hoped that the United States would provide them with a fresh start and more freedom. However, this was not always the case, as many Jews continued to experience antisemitism in their new home. This is a program exploring Jewish immigration in the United States, presented by Hasia Diner, the Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University, in conversation with Daniel Okrent, author of The Guarded Gate: Bigotry, Eugenics, and the Law that Kept Two Generations of Jews, Italians, and Other European Immigrants Out of America. They will discuss the different waves of immigration during this period, the specific reasons why Jews left Europe, and why they chose the United States as their new home.

Lecture | The Local and the Global in the Art of Pancho Fierro (online)

Dr. Orlando Hernández-Ying's talk will explore the latest findings on the historiography of the legendary Peruvian 19th-century painter, Francisco “Pancho” Fierro. The Afro-Peruvian painter is credited for the creation of a visual repertoire of local Peruvian types that became mirrors of the different constituents of Lima’s contemporary society. The graphic representation of the people of Lima was also fundamental in the visualization of Peruvian national identity. These watercolor depictions of Lima’s common folk were profusely commercialized to satisfy the demand for souvenirs of new European and North American travelers that looking for new investment opportunities, arrived in Peru for the first time after its independence from Spain as its ports opened to international trade.

Concert | Master Guitarist from Uruguay

Program: Four Sonatas by Manuel Ponce: Sonata Clasica (1928), Homage to Fernando Sor Sonata Romantica (1929), Homage to Franz Schubert Sonata No. 3 (1927) Sonata Mexicana (1923) The Uruguayan guitarist Eduardo Fernandez returns with a program of music by Manuel Ponce. The master Uruguayan guitarist is back on Music of the Americas forty-five years after his debut with a concert dedicated to the music of Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, one of the most prolific composers of the last century. Eduardo Fernandez is recognized as one of today's leading guitarists. Born in 1952 in Uruguay, he began his studies of guitar at age seven. His principal teachers were Abel Carlevaro, Guido Santorsola, and Hector Tosar. After being prized in several international competitions, the most notable being the 1972 Porto Alegre (Brazil) and 1975 Radio France (Paris) competitions, he won the first prize of the 1975 Andres Segovia Competition in Mallorca, Spain. The Mexican composer Manuel Maria Ponce Cuellar was musically active in the first half of the 20th century. In a period when folk and popular music was segregated composers like Ponce encouraged national cultural pride in their country's musical heritage.

Tony Award nominee Robert O’Hara (Slave Play, The Public’s Barbecue) brings his sharp wit and storytelling genius with a bold new production of Richard III. One of Shakespeare’s most indelible villains, Richard is determined to be King. Following his lust for power and the throne, he manipulates, kidnaps, and kills all who stand between him and his throne, using brilliant words and dark charm to conceal his dismantling of government and justice. This masterful dive into the muddy middle between political genius and violent power grab arrives with piercing relevancy and electrifying drama.
