Discussion | Artists Talk: Experimental Landings

Experimental Landings is an exhibition that interrogates how designers assert agency through the representation, organization, and formation of land. “Landings” is thus intended to “activate” a familiar architectural term that recognizes the often binary and dissociated realms of site versus property, ground versus territory. By shifting the term from noun to verb, the exhibition seeks to reposition land as an active agent with a broader context, territory, and community. By exploring its “mediatric” potential a critical project may provoke and highlight land’s intrinsic ability to engage and inform broader socio-political and/or climatological consequences. Understood as an elastic and open-ended framework of consideration this collective exhibition of work will showcase how architecture and landscape experiments across “land” address new definitions of formal practice across several thematics including artificial earths, seeding resilience, imaging ground, and mapping maintenance. Moderated by Jonathan Scelsa and featuring Debbie Chen, Zaneta Hong, Emily Knox, Michael Wen-Sen Su, Ambika Pharma, Aroussiak Gabrielian, Fionn Byrne, Rafael Beneytez-Duran, Gillian Shaffer Lutsko, Alexandra Barker, Lola Ben-Alon, Ariane Harrison, and Marc Miller.

Jazz | Harlem Night Songs with Veteran Jazz Trombonist

When Craig Harris exploded onto the jazz scene in 1976, he brought the entire history of the jazz trombone with him. From the growling gutbucket intensity of early New Orleans music through the refined, articulate improvisation of the modern era set forth by J.J. Johnson, and into the confrontational expressionism of the '60s avant-garde, Craig handled the total vernacular the way a skilled orator utilizes the spoken word. He has performed with a veritable Who's Who of progressive jazz' most important figures - including Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Abdullah Ibrahim, Jaki Byard, Muhal Richard Abrams, David Murray, Henry Threadgill, Lester Bowie, The WORLD Saxophone Quartet, The Roots, RAKIM and the list goes on and on - his own projects displayed both a unique sense of concept and a total command of the sweeping expanse of musical expression. And it's those two qualities that have dominated Craig's past 15 years of activity, bringing him far beyond the confines of the jazz world and into the sphere of multimedia and performance art as composer, performer, conceptualist, curator and artistic director.

Performance | channel 1-3: Performance Art

In the multisensory performance channels, Yo-Yo Lin explores the intricate pathways of the chronically ill body. Lin understands us all to inhabit multiple bodies: ones made up of what we commonly think of as our physical body composed of its parts and organs, and others seemingly invisible, extending beyond the skin, taking the form of energetic fields and kindred relationships. In her work, she generates connections within and between these bodies through the concept of qi 氣, networked technologies, and disabled embodiment. As materials for this exploration, she uses and amplifies the connective tissue of her own body as well as the care relationships that bond two or more bodies together. Weaving audiovisual poetry, bodily music, and technology-mediated dance together, the performance invokes crip, cybernetic possibilities for how we imagine our bodies. To the audience, Lin poses a series of questions: What channels exist within ourselves that connect us to ancestral ways of knowing? Can pain be a portal, and care a feedback loop? What are the electrical currents that we signal to one another, reminding us that even in continued isolation, we are not alone? Isn’t virtual togetherness another form of astral projection?

Play | Richard III: Shakespeare Drama Outdoors

Tony Award nominee Robert O’Hara (Slave Play, The Public’s Barbecue) brings his sharp wit and storytelling genius with a bold new production of Richard III. One of Shakespeare’s most indelible villains, Richard is determined to be King. Following his lust for power and the throne, he manipulates, kidnaps, and kills all who stand between him and his throne, using brilliant words and dark charm to conceal his dismantling of government and justice. This masterful dive into the muddy middle between political genius and violent power grab arrives with piercing relevancy and electrifying drama.
