Talk | The Art of Black and White Photography (online)

Colors are an essential part of the world. The infinite shades of blue in the sky and the ocean, the delicate greens of vegetation in the springtime, the gold and reds of foliage in fall. But what happens when these colors are removed? Suddenly we step away from reality and enter an unfamiliar world where patterns, geometrical shapes and contrasts emerge stronger. During this lecture, Thibault Roland will discuss black and white photography. How to create and use leading lines, textures and light in order to build dynamic and original photographs. He will illustrate how important it is to visualize and build an image even before pressing the shutter, and how your overall photography work (including color) can benefit from the rigorous process of creating in B&W.

Park Walk | Tide Deck Tour

A guided tour of the Tide Deck for a unique river ecology experience. The design for pier is inspired by Manhattan’s natural shoreline prior to European colonization in the 17th century. The pier includes a series of ecological communities representing this native landscape, from a woodland forest to the rocky tidal zone and the Hudson River itself. One of the most unique of these native coastal environments is on the Tide Deck, which is an engineered rocky tidal marsh located on the western end of the pier. The Tide Deck ebbs and floods with our daily tidal cycle and features many interesting habitat enhancements including tide pools. Tours are offered every 30 minutes.

Concert | 4 Indie Rock Bands - Outdoors

This bill of bracing indie rock bands promises to jolt you out of complacency. Headliner Horsegirl hails from Chicago, Illinois, and offers a scuzzy Gen-Z take on 90s alternative approved by their elders; their debut LP Versions of Modern Performance features contributions from Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo. Denmark's Iceage, having honed their exceedingly stylish brand of moody post-punk for years, offer perhaps the most convincing rock star performance this side of a sports arena; their last LP Seek Shelter reached a high water mark for gothic grandeur. Brooklyn-based Water From Your Eyes are likely the most unique band on the bill, making experimental pop music that's pretty and violent, raw and indelible - layering loops and industrial beats with twinkling pop melodies that split the difference between catchy and off-kilter. Lifeguard shares both a Chicago scene and retro aesthetic with Horsegirl; their latest EP Crowd Can Talk is a head rush of fuzz and swirling riffs.

Book Discussion | How to Become an American: A History of Immigration, Assimilation, and Loneliness

Daniel Wolff's book opens with a woman's abandoned diary--and from there award-winning author Daniel Wolff examines the sweeping history of immigration into the United States through the experiences of one unnamed, Jewish family. This deeply human journey carries the reader from pre-Civil War Charleston, South Carolina, to post-World War II Minneapolis, Minnesota, paralleling America's transition through the Industrial Age. An aching loneliness threads through this story, raising the question of why a country that prides itself on being "a nation of immigrants," where "all men are created equal," leaves many feeling alone in the land we love.

Book Discussion | 2 New Books by Peruvian Writers (online)

Contemporary translators Jennifer Shyue and Michelle Har Kim in a conversation moderated by translator Lisa Hofmann-Kuroda, following their respective recent publications that bridge literary spheres and allow us access to the acclaimed works of two Peruvian writers. José Watanabe’s poetry collection Natural History is a contribution to ongoing cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary conversations about language, nature, and Asian migration across the Americas. For the first time, it is available in a dual-language edition that features both Spanish and English in Michelle Har Kim’s translation. Born to immigrants from Okinawa and raised in Lima’s working-class center, Augusto Higa Oshiro was a Peruvian writer and member of Peru’s Grupo Narración, a group of writers focused on realist, working-class fiction in the 1970s. His novella, The Enlightenment of Katzuo Nakamatsu, is translated from Spanish by Jennifer Shyue and is his first book to be translated into English.

Book Discussion | Twentieth-Century Man: The Wild Life of Peter Beard

Christopher Wallace's exuberant biography is the life of the iconic photographer and naturalist Peter Beard, whose life and work captured the cultural imagination. Peter Beard lived an astonishing life. The artist, wildlife photographer, and bon vivant enthralled and inspired both because of his work and his legendary lifestyle. A scion of American industry turned explorer of Africa and environmental advocate, Beard embodied the extremes of his time: grand adventurer and sexually voracious partier, friend of everyone from the Rolling Stones to Jackie Onassis to Andy Warhol to Karen Blixen. And Beard had a passion—probably more like an obsession—with the faults of the entire human experiment, with the ways in which our consumption of the world’s resources have come to consume us all.
