Book Club | Nothing but the Night by John Williams

John Williams’s first novel is a brooding psychological noir. Arthur Maxley is a young man at the end of his emotional rope. Having dropped out of college, he’s holed up in a big-city hotel, living off an allowance from his family, feeling nothing but alone and doing nothing but drinking to forget it. What’s brought him to this point? Something is troubling him, something is haunting him, something he cannot bring himself either to face or to turn away from. And now his father has come to town, a hail-fellow-well-met kind of guy. They’ve been estranged for years, and yet Arthur wants to meet—and so he does, reeling away from the encounter for a night of drinking and dancing and a final reckoning with the traumatizing past that readers will not soon forget.

Performance | Zar: Performance Art

A live performance by artist Iman Le Caire.   "ZAK is a ritualistic practice aimed at healing and exorcism, rooted in the belief that certain spirits afflict individuals with physical or psychological ailments. The term ZAK itself means SPIRIT. Enter the world of ZAK through my Egyptian eyes. I was born into a culture steeped in tradition and belief. I was told by my own family that I was possessed by a demonic spirit. They called me Evil Child because my feminity was evidence of my connection with the Devil. Prevented from embracing my true identity and from transitioning I struggled to reconcile my inner truth with the external expectations placed upon me. Through the transformative power of dance and ritual, I confront stigma and prejudice." -Iman Le Caire Born in Egypt, Iman Le Caire was a successful contemporary dancer at the Cairo Opera. She fled to the US due to persecution. In 2020 Iman joined the Black Trans Liberation Movement and became the voice of Middle-Eastern Transgenders. She created Trans Asylias, a non-profit dedicated to relocating transgender individuals to safe countries.

Book Discussion | Life Underground: Encounters with People Below the Streets of New York by Terry Willians

Aboveground, Manhattan’s Riverside Park provides open space for the densely populated Upper West Side. Beneath its surface run railroad tunnels, disused for decades, where over the years unhoused people have taken shelter. The sociologist Terry Williams ventured into the tunnel residents’ world, seeking to understand life on the margins and out of sight. He visited the tunnels between West Seventy-Second and West Ninety-Sixth Streets hundreds of times from 1991 to 1996, when authorities cleared them out to make way for Amtrak passenger service, and again between 2000 and 2020. Life Underground explores this society below the surface and the varieties of experience among unhoused people. Bringing together anecdotal material, field observations, photographs, transcribed conversations with residents, and excerpts from personal journals, Williams provides a vivid ethnographic portrait of individual people, day-to-day activities, and the social world of the underground and their engagement with the world above, which they call “topside.” He shows how marginalized people strive to make a place for themselves amid neglect and isolation as they struggle for dignity. Featuring Williams’s distinctive ethnographic eye and deep empathy for those on the margins, Life Underground shines a unique light on a vanished subterranean community. At this event,  sociologist Terry Williams will discuss his new book and more with economist Natalia Filippova Williams.
