Lecture | George Grosz (1893-1959): The Stick Men (online)

George Grosz (1893–1959) created the “Stick Men” series in Huntington, where he lived from 1947 until shortly before his death. Featuring hollow figures in an apocalyptic landscape, this group of watercolors offers a searing indictment of humanity following World War II, the Holocaust, and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Grosz was an internationally renowned German-born artist who remained invested in political art following his immigration to the United States in 1933. In the “Stick Men” series, he wrestles with the emergence of Abstract Expressionism and reaffirms the ability of painting to impact society. Speaker Karli Wurzelbacher, PhD, is the Chief Curator of The Heckscher Museum of Art, where she has curated more than a dozen exhibitions. She has also worked at the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland and the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. Wurzelbacher has published on artists including Grosz, Courtney M. Leonard, Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, Joseph Stella, and Jack Whitten. She earned a PhD in art history from the University of Delaware.

Jim Henson meets Oscar Wilde in this high-energy farce, with slapstick physicality, clown work, innovative ways of storytelling and outrageous characters in over-the-top situations - all performed by two actors and a menagerie of puppets. Two intrepid puppeteers set the stage to perform an elaborate piece of theater. Their show begins with a Chef and a Maid preparing for the arrival of their lord and lady's guests, and when they do -- a dinner party reveals affairs, spawns beet-related business deals, and culminates in a bowl of Lobster Bisque to die for. Join the fantasy realm where the biggest problems in life are what dress shall I wear to the ball? Should I have my pears roasted or poached? And who poisoned the bloody soup?! Book Discussion | What Do We Need Bosses For? Toward Economic Democracy by Pete Dolack

A celebration and discussion of the new book What Do We Need Bosses For? Toward Economic Democracy, written by Pete Dolack and published by Autonomedia. The author will discuss the themes of the book, centering on efforts to establish new systems of economic democracy on a national or society-wide basis, and leave plenty of time for audience questions and participation. The book analyzes past and present efforts to establish systems of economic democracy on a national or society-wide basis in the context of establishing the necessity of economic democracy, dissecting the mounting inequalities of capitalism and discussing theoretical ideas as to how we might organize a better world. Working people around the world have repeatedly sought to create a better world. They have organized to reverse their subordinate positions in capitalist production and instead take charge of their working lives and their workplaces through egalitarian movements that sought to build an economy for everybody rather than a minuscule elite. Political democracy is impossible without economic democracy. Economic democracy, in turn, is impossible under capitalism. The core of the book consists of six chapters describing past and present efforts to establish new systems of economic democracy on a national or society-wide basis. These six examples are workers’ self-management in Yugoslavia, workers’ control in Prague Spring-era Czechoslovakia, the social-property area of Allende-era Chile, the democratic confederalism of Rojava, the cooperatives of Cuba and the communes of Venezuela. Surrounding these six chapters are discussions of the necessity of economic democracy, critiques of the mounting inequalities of capitalism and analyses of several theoretical ideas by various authors as to how we might organize a better world, one that produces for human need rather than private profit. There are also brief discussions of several other examples of attempts to establish economic democracy in the context of concretizing various theoretical constructs.

Concert | Star-studded triple bill: first-ever Pakistani Grammy winner, Indian film music superstar and Tunisia's voice of the Arab Spring - Outdoors

Like many children of the diaspora, Arooj Aftab straddles the old world and the new, studied and trained in modern sounds but carrying the spirit and tradition of her ancestral home in her bones. The first-ever Pakistani artist to win a GRAMMY broke out with her 2021 album Vulture Prince, a stunning collection of minimal compositions drawing from jazz, folk, Hindustani classical, and Urdu ghazals. She's since found kindred spirits in Vijay Iyer and Shahzas Ismaily, whose unplanned, improvised performance revealed a natural chemistry that coalesced on their collaborative LP Love in Exile. Sid Sriram is an Indian Carnatic musician, producer, and star of Indian film music, whose latest LP Sidharth is a collaborative effort with Def Jam producer Ryan Olson and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon that explores intersections of Carnatic music with his R&B and indie rock influences. The third headliner is EMEL (Emel Mathlouthi), the Tunisian/American, New York City-based artist, producer, and activist whose protest song "Kelmti Horra" ("My Word is Free") became an anthem for the Tunisian Revolution and the Arab Spring. Her newest 100% woman-made album MRA (meaning 'woman' in Arabic) is a multi-genre and multilingual meld where African trap, batucada, Arabic reggaeton, hip hop, and drum n' bass rub shoulders seamlessly with vibrant melodies and empowering lyrics that seek to amplify and strengthen the voices of women worldwide.
