You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. Recently inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, Toussaint is a true living legend; having already spent most of his seven decades composing, producing, arranging, and performing, his ambition seems endless. A New Orleans native in every sense, Toussaint was an engine driving early R&B, soul, and funk, setting musical precedents that continue to influence music today. Concert | Grammy-winning salsa artist Eddie Palmieri


This is a musical tribute celebrating 50 years in the world of salsa. Eddie Palmieri (pictured), known for his charismatic power and bold innovative drive, has a musical career that spans over 50 years as a bandleader of Salsa and Latin Jazz orchestras. With a discography that includes 36 titles, he has been awarded nine Grammy Awards, his first in 1975 for the historic LP The Sun of Latin Music. Also performing will be La Excelencia, about which The New York Times has written, "It takes just a note or two to hear that La Excelencia is different. This is unprettified salsa dura, with the percussion cranked, lots of breaks, the voices loud, almost distorted. It's unapologetic." The Master of Ceremonies is Polito Vega. The official DJ is DJ Wreck.

Discussion | Craig Claiborne and the Invention of Food Journalism


Called the nation’s preeminent food journalist, Craig Claiborne trained in Switzerland as a chef on the GI bill after World War II. On his return to the United States, he began writing articles for Gourmet and became an editor at the magazine. His career skyrocketed when The New York Times hired him as its first food columnist in 1957. Claiborne's columns, reviews, and cookbooks introduced Americans to a wide range of international and ethnic food. The panel explores Claiborne's life, work, and his seminal influence on food journalism in America. With Molly O’Neill, former New York Times columnist, and author of The New York Cookbook; Betty Fussell, author of The Story of Corn and Raising Steaks; Anne Mendelson, author of Stand Facing the Stove, and Milk: The Surprising Story of Milk Through the Ages and a contributing editor to Gourmet; David Leite, publisher/editor-in-chief of Leite's Culinaria and author of The New Portuguese Table; and John T. Edge, contributing editor to Gourmet and author of Southern Belly. The panel will be moderated by Andrew F. Smith, editor of The Oxford Companion to American Food and Drink.

A talk, book signing and reception with one of the world’s most influential editorial photographer - Dan Winters, on the occasion of the publication of Dan Winters' first monograph, Periodical Photographs (Aperture, May 2009). Dan Winters has contributed to some of America's most prestigious magazines, including New York, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Texas Monthly, and the New York Times Magazine. The book includes Winters's definitive portraits of some of Hollywood's most photographed A-listers, among them Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslett, Denzel Washington, and Leonardo DiCaprio, and music superstars Bono, Eminem, and Willie Nelson. His voracious passion for the quirky and the creative also draws him to visual artists, scientists, architects, and everyday, extraordinary Americans. One of the last additions to the book is a portrait of President Barack Obama taken in San Antonio, Texas, in March 2008 for Time. Designed by Scott Dadich, award-winning creative director of Wired magazine, and with a preface by Lynn Hirschberg, editor-at-large at New York Times Magazine, Periodical Photographs showcases a photographer at the top of his game. Dan Winters (born in Ventura, California, 1962) lives in Austin and Los Angeles. He is the recipient of more than a hundred awards, including the Alfred Eisenstadt Award for Magazine Photography and a World Press Photo Award.
