Screening | The World of Thomas Cole: a unique program on Cole and the Hudson River School of painting

Long regarded as the founder of the Hudson River School, America’s first art movement, Thomas Cole (1801-1848) is a central figure in the development of American culture. When Cole made his first trip up the Hudson River in 1825, cultural leaders were searching for something distinctly American to establish the nation’s own culture as separate from that of Europe. Thomas Cole found it in the Catskill Mountain wilderness, which came to symbolize the unspoiled character of the new nation. Lionized during his lifetime and celebrated by a generation of artists who followed in his footsteps, Cole is now widely regarded as the father of American landscape painting. Following a short documentary film, Kimberly Orcutt, Curator of American Art and Elizabeth Jacks, Director of the Thomas Cole Historic Site will discuss the Historical Society’s Cole holdings in its rich Hudson River School collection. Afterwords, visit the Hudson River School exhibition and see Cole’s and other artist's paintings for themselves.

Staged Reading | Jenne Wason and Alan Cancelino's The White Rose

Munich, 1942. While everyone around them endured in silence, a group of University students chose to speak out against the atrocities happening in their country. Sophie Scholl, her brother Hans, and their friends started a resistance movement in a time when movements seemed impossible. They risked everything to create and distribute leaflets denouncing Hitler. Their movement was growing until they paid the ultimate price. Still they would not be silent. Allied planes flew over Europe dropping the Leaflets of The White Rose. Their words offered hope to a desperate nation. In this new musical drama, their voice lives on.

Other | Orientation for the Great Pollinator Project

The Great Pollinator Project engages citizen scientists throughout New York City to count bees during the summer in order to help researchers figure out the pollination service provided by several different bee groups (bumble, honey, green metallic, and carpenter). Pollination service is the number and kind of bees that buzz available flowers, and researchers are interested in how bee distribution varies within the urban landscape. Researchers are also interested in raising public awareness about native bees and improving park management practices to benefit native bees. Of the nearly 4,000 species of bees in North America, more than 220 species reside in New York City. Bees help renew parks and gardens and keep fruit bowls stocked with fresh produce. Interested parties should attend orientation for potential bee watchers for the upcoming third season of data collection.

Discussion | Panel Discussion & Book Signing for “Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography”

From the beginning, abstraction has been intrinsic to photography, and its persistent popularity reveals much about the medium. The Edge of Vision, exhibition curated by Lyle Rexer, showcases the work of nineteen international contemporary photographers who base their practice in some form of abstraction from highly conceptual to more documentary approaches. This abstract use of photography often combines other mediums such as painting, sculpture, drawing or video. The exhibition is accompanied by a new book, The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography by Lyle Rexer (Aperture, May 2009). Illustrated with more than 150 images, this unprecedented and highly anticipated book documents this phenomenon internationally from the early days of the medium through the present day.

This talk will focus on the work of the DSNY in those months immediately after September 11, 2001.
