Screening | International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival

PROGRAM: 6pm Masha Novikova's Anna, Seven Years on the Frontline (2008, 78 min.), followed by a Q&A with Ann Cooper. Anna Politkovskaya, a Russian journalist with the Novaya Gazeta newspaper who was not afraid to openly criticise her government's approach to the war in Chechnya, was murdered on 7 October 2007. With four shots, an unknown killer ended the life of a woman who for many represented the hope that crimes committed would not be overlooked and forgotten. This absorbing documentary tells the story of the journalist's life. 9:30pm Ritu Sarin & Tenzing Sonam's The Sun Behind the Clouds (2009, 79 min.), followed by Q&A with Robbie Barnett, Coumbia University. Last year saw the 50th anniversary of the Chinese invasion of Tibet. Throughout the last five decades, the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has pushed his nation to accept a non-violent middle way based on dialogue with the government of China as a means to achieving autonomy. Nevertheless, Beijing has completely ignored those efforts, while the Dalai Lama's diplomacy around the world has so far led nowhere. Now radical Tibetans have run out of patience, leading both to bloody riots in Lhasa in March 2008 and demonstrations at the Dalia Lama's residence in India's Dharamsala, where protestors burned Chinese flags and demanded complete independence. This film features both the Dalai Lama himself and a number of Tibetan intellectuals.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Hans Benda's Lodger

Hans Benda nods to Northern European painting tradition in his captivating portraits of women and landscapes in that the works reveal quiet allegorical connotations. In the dozen small paintings that make up this exhibition, Benda uses tight cropping, focusing on the charm of the miniscule and the transient. In the portrait Zuviel J.S. Bach, he depicts a Vermeer'esque passing glance at an arguably innocent young brunette. In Nozze D'oro he uses a minimal palette of green and peach to magnify the endurance of the diminutive calla lilies in a celadon vase during a stage of decay. In Hostage, Benda plays with still-life tradition and the notion of modesty by juxtaposing powder-pink roses with a woman's tanned bare breast. Upon closer examination, one realizes that the vase rests on the woman's thigh not a table.

For the 40 paintings being exhibited, Cimini uses his familiar materials, oil, wax medium, and marble dust on canvas and adheres to his architectural abstract compositions he has been working with over the past 14 years. The Trojan Women is the third tragedy of a trilogy of dealing with the Trojan War by the Greek playwright Euripides. The Trojan women of the play are the same that appear in the final chapter of The Iliad, lamenting over the loss of Hector in this outdoor theater performance. Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith.
