Opening Reception | 2 Shows: Jeremy Comins' Climbers / David Herman's People/Places

Jeremy Comins' fluid, organic sculpture, deftly carved from rich woods-with the occasional addition of bronze-explores humanity's relationship to nature, as well as the complexities of human psychology. Inspired by observing rock climbers in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada, imagining how a figure would climb through his own carved forms, as well as mining the metaphor of returning home to safety, the series encompasses free-standing and wall-mounted works. David Herman's intensely hued suite of acrylics on canvas was inspired by his travels in Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East and beyond. Turning perspective on its head, space is flattened, architectonic forms are abstracted, and the human figure is rendered in silhouette.

Opening Reception | Drawing & Sculpture: Ben Gocker's There is really no single poem

Quoting from a letter from poet Jack Spicer to poet Robin Blaser, Gocker takes his title from Spicer’s intriguing claim, “There is really no single poem.” Though there are no poems per se to be found among Gocker’s bright installations, drawing series, and wall-mounted sculptures, there is significant attention paid to the idea that no work of art should or can exist alone.

Theater | Euripides' The Trojan Women: Timeless Greek Tragedy

The Trojan Women is the third tragedy of a trilogy of dealing with the Trojan War by the Greek playwright Euripides. Produced during the Peloponnesian War, it is often considered a commentary on the capture of the Aegean island of Melos and the subsequent subjugation of its populace by the Athenians earlier in 415 BC, the same year the play premiered. The Trojan women of the play are the same that appear in the final chapter of The Iliad, lamenting over the loss of Hector in this outdoor theater performance. Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith.

This book kills the American small town gently by taking a look at one in particular. Utopia, Texas is everything our politicians' rhetoric would have us imagine: remote, small, rooted in family values. It's also a place full of turmoil, where TV culture holds as much sway over citizen's dreams as it does in the suburbs of Indianapolis or Poughkeepsie. Valby will discuss the town and the individuals she met and wrote about there.
