Theater | Euripides' The Trojan Women: Timeless Greek Tragedy

The Trojan Women is the third tragedy of a trilogy of dealing with the Trojan War by the Greek playwright Euripides. Produced during the Peloponnesian War, it is often considered a commentary on the capture of the Aegean island of Melos and the subsequent subjugation of its populace by the Athenians earlier in 415 BC, the same year the play premiered. The Trojan women of the play are the same that appear in the final chapter of The Iliad, lamenting over the loss of Hector in this outdoor theater performance. Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith.

Opening Reception | 3 Shows: Ecoaesthetic / Consume / The Limit as the Body Approaches Zero

Ecoaesthetic presents artworks that address socio-environmental concerns – and to unite artists, scholars, scientists and the public in discussion on these issues. It showcases the work of nine international photographers, approaches the mystery of beauty in the natural and built environment, which can be destructive or utopian. Consume is a multimedia group exhibition and event series that investigates the world's systems of food production, distribution, consumption and waste. Rafael Sanchez, winner of the 2008 Ida Applebroog Award, will present a series of new performance pieces and documentation from the past ten years of his work in the ground floor project space. Sanchez'’s performances often bridge the spectacle of street life with the meditative interiority of private rituals. During this exhibition, the artist will stage performances that provoke questions about issues as diverse as masculinity, sexuality, gentrification, and bodily limits.

Concert | Underground Sounds: JG Thirlwell's Steroid Maximus / Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio

The prolific Australian composer, producer, performer, visual artist and longtime DUMBO resident JG Thirlwell (pictured) is an elusive but profoundly influential presence in New York City’s underground music world. Working under many pseudonyms, including Foetus, Manorexia, Baby Zizanie, Clint Ruin, and Wiseblood, his varied oeuvre—which stretches the gamut from orchestrations, big band, cathartic noise-rock to abstract electronics and sound sculpture, chamber music, serial music and imaginary soundtracks (sometimes all in the same album)—is linked by a dramatic intensity and an evocative, cinematic quality. He has collaborated with the likes of Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch and Soft Cell, done remixes for NIN and Pantera, scored Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim series The Venture Brothers. Dr. Lonnie Smith, the turban-wearing intergalactic overlord of the Hammond B-3, descends to earth with his trio for an opening set.
