Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: The Absolutely Other

This group exhibition features New York-based artists who make work with, for, and about strangers. For each video, photograph, installation, and performance, artists cast out lines to remote neighbors who (wittingly or not) become active partners in creating the work. The resulting projects realign and sometimes undermine extant social relations and artistic intentions, engaging and confounding issues of authorship, exchange, generosity, and chance. Interactions both off site and within the gallery will continuously shape the exhibition’s content over the course of the show. The artists in the exhibition include: Einat Amir, Daniel Bozhkov, Xavier Cha, Eteam, Hope Hilton, Nancy Hwang, and Dave McKenzie.

Theater | Euripides' The Trojan Women: Timeless Greek Tragedy

The Trojan Women is the third tragedy of a trilogy of dealing with the Trojan War by the Greek playwright Euripides. Produced during the Peloponnesian War, it is often considered a commentary on the capture of the Aegean island of Melos and the subsequent subjugation of its populace by the Athenians earlier in 415 BC, the same year the play premiered. The Trojan women of the play are the same that appear in the final chapter of The Iliad, lamenting over the loss of Hector in this outdoor theater performance. Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith.

Discussion | Evil: Can One Understand a Country by the Nature of Its Criminals?

Evil has always fascinated mankind, be it in myths, in fiction or in real human beings. Today, hideous or very unusual crimes, serial killers, and cold-blooded murderers not only capture the headlines of our news, but also our imagination. Who are those criminals we so often read and hear about or watch in films and TV? What ultimately drives a killer to commit a crime, or a whole series of them? What does the nature of the crime tell us about the society we live in? Do certain unusual crimes reflect on the countries they have been committed in? Join a conversation with Thomas Mueller, one of Europe’s most respected criminal psychologists, American author John Leake, who wrote a novel about Jack Unterweger (a celebrity author and at the same time one of Austria’s most gruesome serial killers), and New York-based Professor Jo Dixon, an expert on the sociology of crime

Concert | Rock & Pop: Kid Koala's Short Attention Span Audio Theater / The Slew / Hess Is More

A DJ, graphic novelist, musician, and producer of rare ingenuity, Kid Koala (pictured) “pairs his deck skills with a songwriter's smarts and the timing of a stand-up comedian.” (Time Out New York) He serves up a sampling of his far flung talents here: excerpts of his Short Attention Span Audio Theatre, a vinyl vaudeville of all sorts of mischief featuring DJ P-Love, are followed by The Slew, in which 6 turntables worth of live sampled guitar riffs meets the ex-Wolfmother rhythm section for a head-banging finale. Led by deadpan Danish pop-provocateur Mikkel Hess, Hess Is More channels Jon Brion, Flight of the Conchords and Steve Martin with gleeful abandon, switching instruments mid-song and looping riffs and beats to create what they call freestyle disco jazz. “Strange and engaging—part disco, part experimental pop, part performance-art happening.” (Time Out New York)
