Opening Reception | The Permanent Way, Images of the Old Railroads

Photography was a new invention in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, and as a technology it grew up alongside railroads—especially in America, where the first accurate representations of a given place were often made by photographers working on behalf of railroad expansion. Surveys of this vast, largely uncharted territory were commissioned by the government and by the railroad companies themselves, and sent photographers like A.J. Russell, Timothy O'Sullivan, and William Henry Jackson out into the field. Their images, widely distributed through government documents, news-media reproductions, and tourist publications, played an especially important role in refashioning the imagined American landscape. This exhibition includes a small selection of such materials, encompassing railroad maps, lithographs taken from illustrated magazines, other prints, and turn-of-the-twentieth-century photo-postcards. From them, one can discover how quickly fresh observation gave way to visual convention. Featuring work by: Jeff Brouws, Justine Kurland, Mark Ruwedel, Victoria Sambunaris, and James Welling. Shown: Mark Ruwedel, "San Diego and Arizona Eastern #7," 2003. From the series "Westward the Course of Empire." Gelatin silver print.

Other | Big Apple Cogers: Open Mic Debate Event

Have something to get off your chest? Join a FREE monthly open-mic debate event brought to you by The International Debate Education Association in affiliation with the Society of Cogers. Founded in the City of London in 1755, the Cogers can claim to be the oldest free speech forum in the world. IDEA brings this tradition to NYC with the introduction of the Big Apple Cogers, which meets for a lively open debate on current events. Here's how it works - the evening kicks off with a 10- to 15-minute speech made by the “Opener” that recaps the most important topics that have occurred since the previous meeting and outlines potential topics for debate. Next, everyone in the audience is invited to make 5-minute speeches that either respond to these topics or bring new topics to the debate. It's steeped in quirky tradition and is a great opportunity to get out from behind your computer and have your opinions challenged in an open forum.

Discussion | Linda Hirshman discusses her book Victory: The Triumphant Gay Revolution

When the modern struggle for gay rights erupted—most notably at a bar called Stonewall in Greenwich Village—in the summer of 1969, most religious traditions condemned homosexuality; psychiatric experts labeled people who were attracted to others of the same sex "crazy"; and forty-nine states outlawed sex between people of the same gender. Four decades later, in June 2011, New York legalized gay marriage—the most populous state in the country to do so thus far. The armed services stopped enforcing Don't Ask, Don't Tell, ending a law that had long discriminated against gay and lesbian members of the military. Successful social movements are always extraordinary, but these advances were something of a miracle. In her new book, political columnist Linda Hirshman recounts the long roads that led to these victories, viewing the gay rights movement within the tradition of American freedom as the third great modern social-justice movement, alongside the civil rights movement and the women's rights movement.

Theater | Shakespeare's As You Like It, Directed by Tony Winner Daniel Sullivan

Rosalind, Shakespeare's most breathtaking heroine, and her boyfriend Orlando find themselves in the enchanted Forest of Arden, where all the world's a stage, and where sudden infatuation is as confusing as it is beautiful. Along with other "country copulatives," they discover that nothing transforms, redeems, or enriches experience quite as powerfully as love. As You Like It has everything we adore about Shakespearean comedy: mistaken identity, cross-dressing, madness, mayhem, rage, lust, laughter, and of course plenty of romance, both heartbreaking and joyous. Featuring Brendan Averett, Andre Braugher, Donna Lynne Champlin, Grantham Coleman, Jon DeVries, MacIntyre Dixon, Susannah Flood, David Furr, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Andrew Hovelson, Robert Joy, Jesse Lenat, Erik Mathew, Omar Metwally, Oliver Platt, Lily Rabe, Will Rogers, Michael Rudko, Justine Salata, Paul Saylor, Anna Phyllis Smith, Stephen Spinella, and Brendan Titley. Concert | Kirtan Music

Devadas has released two cds, "Ocean - Songs for Amma" and "Shine Shine On" and is currently recording and singing anywhere and everywhere they'll have him. A Bhajan is any type of Indian devotional song. It has no fixed form: it may be as simple as a mantra or kirtan or as sophisticated as the dhrupad or kriti with music based on classical ragas and talas. It is normally lyrical, expressing love for the Divine. The name, a cognate of bhakti, meaning religious devotion, suggests its importance to the bhakti movement.
