Opening Reception | Photocollages: Masaki Asakawa's colors complex

Asakawa chose to explore the theme of a mass consumption society after feeling the effect of its instability and uneasiness in his own life. Through reconstructing the automobile, which he views as “the symbol of the mass consumption society,” via photocollage, Asakawa hopes to present viewers with a reimagining of contemporary society. Born in 1963 in Tokyo, Japan, Asakawa graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1988. Today he is a professor at the Yokohama College of Art and Design. His work has been shown in Tokyo, Kyoto, New York and Milan and has been awarded the Grand prix during the Esquire Digital Photograph Awards for 2004 to 2005.

Slide Lecture | New York's Lost Subways

The New York City subway system has 842 miles of track, making it the largest in North America. However, there's even more to it than riders see: dozens of tunnels and platforms that were either abandoned or were built but never used. They form a kind of ghost system and this visual presentation reveals how the city's transit ambitions have been both realized and thwarted. WNYC reporter Jim O'Grady will talk about those lines and stations that never were--or were started and are now unused. Guided by an "urban explorer," he snuck into one of them deep under Brooklyn. He'll also speak about creating an interactive online map that overlays these phantom lines and stations on top of the existing system.

Dance Performance | Step Competition

Each evening from Wednesday, June 13 through Friday, June 15, two step teams will battle each other. On Saturday, the festival culminates in a stepping workshop followed by a showcase performance. Stepping is an energetic and precise form of group movement that uses a mixture of spoken word, footsteps, and handclaps to transform the participants’ bodies into rhythmic instruments. The history of stepping is rooted in the competitive schoolyard song and dance rituals of historically African American fraternities and sororities.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: Crazy Blood by Jens Hillje & Nurkan Erpulat

A loose adaptation of French director Jean-Paul Lilienfeld’s film La journée de la jupe. Both productions focus on a secondary school teacher who takes her class of disobedient immigrant students hostage and attempts to teach them about tolerance by forcing them to read Enlightenment-era literature. Comically reducing virulent immigrant stereotypes to absurdity, this surprise hit shows young second or third generation German-Turks on whom their teacher works off her educational mandate with a gun in her hand and Schiller’s Enlightenment ideal in her brain until all the clichés stand on their heads. The staged reading will be followed by a Q&A with the playwrights.

In one of the most powerful documentaries to emerge from the Arab Spring, archaeologist Stefano Savona carries viewers beyond the headlines and into the heart of the popular Egyptian revolution that overthrew President Mubarek and touched off revolutions throughout the Middle East: Tahrir Square. Captured with only a small digital camera and sound recorder, his portrait of the seething, chanting crowds and electric protest speeches is anchored by fluid exchanges with a handful of individual protesters. A highlight of the New York, Locarno, and Venice film festivals, Tahrir documents history in the making. 93 min. In Arabic with English subtitles.

Theater | Shakespeare's As You Like It, Directed by Tony Winner Daniel Sullivan

Rosalind, Shakespeare's most breathtaking heroine, and her boyfriend Orlando find themselves in the enchanted Forest of Arden, where all the world's a stage, and where sudden infatuation is as confusing as it is beautiful. Along with other "country copulatives," they discover that nothing transforms, redeems, or enriches experience quite as powerfully as love. As You Like It has everything we adore about Shakespearean comedy: mistaken identity, cross-dressing, madness, mayhem, rage, lust, laughter, and of course plenty of romance, both heartbreaking and joyous. Featuring Brendan Averett, Andre Braugher, Donna Lynne Champlin, Grantham Coleman, Jon DeVries, MacIntyre Dixon, Susannah Flood, David Furr, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Andrew Hovelson, Robert Joy, Jesse Lenat, Erik Mathew, Omar Metwally, Oliver Platt, Lily Rabe, Will Rogers, Michael Rudko, Justine Salata, Paul Saylor, Anna Phyllis Smith, Stephen Spinella, and Brendan Titley.
