Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

With Lee Kogan. Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche.

Screening | Exceprts from Julian Schlossberg's Witnesses to the 20th Century

Julian Schlossberg, veteran film and Broadway theater producer had an idea. He would videotape all the influential figures who had shaped the Twentieth Century and weave these accounts into a decade by decade chronology as told by the history makers themselves. It was a race against time. These legends were, for the most part, well past 75. Schlossberg wanted to convince 150 of them to share their unique points of view. For several, this would turn out to be their last interview. Amazingly, Presidents, Generals, newscasters, ambassadors archbishops, Governors, Senators, Congressmen, journalists, authors, playwrights, cabinet members, actors, singers, architects and titans of industry all said yes..... Some agreed to 30 minutes and stayed for hours. To a person, they were candid and brought unexpected insight into the events that shaped the world that we live in today. Among the completed interviews are: Madeline Albright, Buzz Aldrin, Robert Altman, Kofi Annan, Lauren Bacall, Joan Baez, F. Lee Bailey, Sec. James Baker, Ben Bradlee, Tom Brokaw, Helen Gurley Brown, Pat Buchanan, Art Buchwald, William F. Buckley, Jr., George H.W Bush. Schlossberg has completed the first five 45-minute segments which include film clips, stills, archival footage and newsreels. These will be shown for the first time in New York City

Slide Lecture | Hollywood Battles Television

With Max Alvarez, film scholar, cultural writer, historian and festival curator. This visual talk takes audiences (via DVD clips and slides) on a journey through moviegoing during the tense prosperity of the Eisenhower era. As millions stayed home to watch Milton Berle and Lucille Ball on brand new television sets in the late 1940s and early '50s, Hollywood studios lost fortunes. To fight this TV enemy, the movie industry seduced wayward moviegoers with 3-D, stereophonic sound, CinemaScope, and a new generation of stars ideally suited to bolder and more adult subject matter: Marlon Brando, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sidney Poitier.

Film | Korean Cinema: Yong-gyun Kim's The Sword with No Name (2009)

A big hit at the Korean box office, Sword is the epitome of posh, luscious, decadent period filmmaking. Based on the real life Empress Myeongseong, it tells her story through the eyes of a bounty hunter who becomes her bodyguard. She tries to stand up to Russian and Japanese intervention in 19th Century Korea and the results are a series of luxurious, CGI-enhanced action scenes alternating with carefully calibrated and eye-meltingly colorful scenes of court life, making this movie feel like an unholy mix of Merchant-Ivory and The Matrix.

Poetry Reading | Pulitzer winner Michael Cunningham and others read from Complete Poems: C.P. Cavafy

No modern poet so vividly brought to life the history and culture of Mediterranean antiquity; no writer dared break, with such taut energy, the early-twentieth-century taboos surrounding homoerotic desire; no poet before or since has so gracefully melded elegy and irony as the Alexandrian Greek poet Constantine Cavafy (1863–1933). Whether advising Odysseus on his return to Ithaca or confronting the poet with the ghosts of his youth, these verses brilliantly make the historical personal—and vice versa. To his profound exploration of longing and loneliness, fate and loss, memory and identity, Cavafy brings the historian’s assessing eye along with the poet’s compassionate heart.
