Opening Reception | Design for the Real World - Redux, an International Exhibition

This exhibition celebrates the outcome of the inaugural international social design competition which took place from March to June 2011. Forty years ago, Viennese-born designer and thinker Victor J. Papanek published his influential book Design for the Real World in which he put forth the idea that “design, if it is to be ecologically responsible and socially responsive, must be revolutionary and radical”—a concept which formed the point of departure for this global endeavor. A total of 92 submissions were received from 20 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States. From these submissions the jury selected 17 projects — 4 winners of the Victor J. Papanek Social Design Award and 13 finalists — which will be exhibited.

What is self-portraiture in the expanded-field? A charcoal drawing is one example, but this research will probe more direct and physical forms of self-positioning. The artists will review the supposition that they are working just by correctly moving their bodies around and assess their role as part of a larger body of people helping each other make sense. Together, the creative populace projects bolstered self-images into the void, or the bounty?

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: Context Message

All of these works have been informally assembled in concert with and in resistance to some of the recent theorizations of contemporary painting, namely those loosely clustered around the semi-recent premise of networked painting. That a gallery plays host to such a notion-to actualize a proposition such as this, to provide an actual site to this virtual para-site, a parasite that is simply looking for a place to eat-a proposition whose communicable lip service has at this point managed to mortar a studio, pay its bills, etch many a practice into textbook careers, could be seen as something of an inevitability.

Slide Lecture | Frank H. Jump discusses his book Fading Ads of New York City

This illustrated lecture documents the fading ads that are visible, but less often seen, all over New York. Disappearing from the sides of buildings or hidden by new construction, these signs are remnants of lost eras of New York’s life. They weave together the city’s unique history, culture, environment and society and tell the stories of the businesses, places and people whose lives transpired among them—the story of New York itself. This photo-documentary is also a study of time and space, of mortality and living, as the author's campaign to capture the ads mirrors his own struggle with HIV. Experience the ads—shot with vintage Kodachrome film—and the meaning they carry through his lens.

Film | Oscar-Nominated Documentary: Christine Choy & Renee Tajima-Peña's Who Killed Vincent Chin? (1987)

A special one-night screening and community panel of the Academy Award-nominated film in recognition of the 30th anniversary of Vincent Chin's murder. On a hot summer night in Detroit in 1982, Ronald Ebens, an autoworker, killed a young Chinese-American engineer with a baseball bat. Although he confessed, he never spent a day in jail. This gripping film relentlessly probes the implications of the murder in the streets of Detroit, for the families of those involved, and for the American justice system. 87 min. The feature will be followed by two short films, Manny Mayi Presente, and What Happened to Private Danny Chen? linking Vincent's case to other stories of racially-motivated crime. A community dialogue will follow, with sharing from organizations working to attain justice, to build multi-racial and immigrant alliances, and to generate solution-based strategies to prevent these tragic events from happening.

Theater | Shakespeare's As You Like It, Directed by Tony Winner Daniel Sullivan

Rosalind, Shakespeare's most breathtaking heroine, and her boyfriend Orlando find themselves in the enchanted Forest of Arden, where all the world's a stage, and where sudden infatuation is as confusing as it is beautiful. Along with other "country copulatives," they discover that nothing transforms, redeems, or enriches experience quite as powerfully as love. As You Like It has everything we adore about Shakespearean comedy: mistaken identity, cross-dressing, madness, mayhem, rage, lust, laughter, and of course plenty of romance, both heartbreaking and joyous. Featuring Brendan Averett, Andre Braugher, Donna Lynne Champlin, Grantham Coleman, Jon DeVries, MacIntyre Dixon, Susannah Flood, David Furr, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Andrew Hovelson, Robert Joy, Jesse Lenat, Erik Mathew, Omar Metwally, Oliver Platt, Lily Rabe, Will Rogers, Michael Rudko, Justine Salata, Paul Saylor, Anna Phyllis Smith, Stephen Spinella, and Brendan Titley.
