Concert | Fishbone, Funk-Punk-Metal-Ska Septet

Few bands stood out in the late 80s with more flamboyance and panache than funk-punk-metal-ska septet Fishbone, whose eclecticism was matched only by its hyperactive stage energy and exuberance. The band’s 1991 album, The Reality of My Surroundings, is a masterpiece of off-kilter genre-melding, lurching from crushing metal jams to Sly Stone-like funk—all of which can be heard in the 2011 award-winning documentary Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone and on their crisp 2011 EP, Crazy Glue.

Performance | Show, a Performance by Maria Hassabi

Show casts a focus on the elements of live performance in a bid to make them plastic and palpable. At the core of its exploration is a paradoxical condition that must be negotiated and resolved by any live work; the attempt to be present in a moment of expression, while existing in an awareness caught by a set of definitive frames. Existing beyond the frame of the theater, new parameters of performance will emerge as Show is set within the conditions of the open air, vulnerable to passersby and other variants.

Gallery Talk | Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: Thomas Arzt's Grillenparz (Chirping Hill)

On Chirping Hill (Grillenparz), a rural place near an Austrian village, the employees of a local company come together for an annual midsummer-nights party, a chance to get back to nature and loosen up. However, this year's event is going to be different because of what happened last year, and all will be revealed and commented on in songs by a chorus of crickets. Thomas Arzt (b. 1983) won several young playwrights' prizes for his first play, Chirping Hill, which premiered at the Vienna Schauspielhaus and focuses on the question of urban disconnection from nature and homeland. He has attended young writers programs in Hamburg, Heidelberg, and Berlin. Arzt's new play, Alpenvorland, a tragicomedy about living between countryside and city, just won the Author's Award at the 2012 Heidelberg Stückemarkt.

Theater | Shakespeare's As You Like It, Directed by Tony Winner Daniel Sullivan

Rosalind, Shakespeare's most breathtaking heroine, and her boyfriend Orlando find themselves in the enchanted Forest of Arden, where all the world's a stage, and where sudden infatuation is as confusing as it is beautiful. Along with other "country copulatives," they discover that nothing transforms, redeems, or enriches experience quite as powerfully as love. As You Like It has everything we adore about Shakespearean comedy: mistaken identity, cross-dressing, madness, mayhem, rage, lust, laughter, and of course plenty of romance, both heartbreaking and joyous. Featuring Brendan Averett, Andre Braugher, Donna Lynne Champlin, Grantham Coleman, Jon DeVries, MacIntyre Dixon, Susannah Flood, David Furr, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Andrew Hovelson, Robert Joy, Jesse Lenat, Erik Mathew, Omar Metwally, Oliver Platt, Lily Rabe, Will Rogers, Michael Rudko, Justine Salata, Paul Saylor, Anna Phyllis Smith, Stephen Spinella, and Brendan Titley.
