One of the oldest free weekly events in Manhattan is Dixieland Jazz with the Gotham Jazzmen, which happen at noon every Tuesday. Another example of an event that you can attend all year round on weekdays is Federal Reserve Bank Tour, which takes place every week day at 1 pm (but advanced reservations are required). You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. If you are classical music afficionado, you can spend whole day in New York going from one free classical concert to another. If you love theater, then New York gives you an option to attend plays and musicals free of charge, or at deep discount. You just need to have information about it. Start at GW Bridge, end at Brooklyn Bridge. Walk for about 12 hours and cross over all of the bridges that we can walk over from Manhattan Island. The entire route will be 27+ miles of walking, plus two or three bus/subway rides. Bring water, sandwiches, snacks, and Metro Card. Moderately paced, plus there may be a “fast group” for those who want to walk faster and farther.

The Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidentally separated at birth. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, which turns out to be the home of their twin brothers, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant, Dromio of Ephesus. When the Syracusans encounter the friends and families of their twins, a series of wild mishaps based on mistaken identities lead to wrongful beatings, a near-seduction, the arrest of Antipholus of Ephesus, and accusations of infidelity, theft, madness, and demonic possession. Concert | Ecstatic Summer: Roomful of Teeth with Merrill Garbus & William Brittelle and Judd Greenstein’s The Yehudim


Dubbed “an epiphany” by The New York Times, The Yehudim is a mixed ensemble of voices, vintage keyboards, electric guitars and basses, and percussion, conceived and directed by composer and New Amsterdam co-director Judd Greenstein. Taking the composer-led super-groups of the 1970s as inspiration – from Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Meredith Monk to Fela Kuti, Isaac Hayes and Herbie Hancock – The Yehudim explores characters from the Hebrew Bible, using the strange stories of their lives and the ancient writings around their characters to weave contemporary narratives that are Passions for our time. Roomful of Teeth perform an integrated set featuring new work by indie-rock superstar Merrill Garbus (pictured) of tUnE-yArDs and electro-acoustic composer and New Amsterdam co-director William Brittelle written for the astoundingly talented multi-stylistic 8-person vocal group. Roomful studies and incorporates non-classical vocal practices, combines them with western styles, and develops new compositions using the fullest possible range of vocal techniques. The set will include Garbus performing selections from the tUne-yArDs catalog with Roomful as backing group, and the world premiere of a new arrangement by William Brittelle for the octet backed by The Yehudim.

New York Classical Theatre's roving production of Twelfth Night recasts the beloved comedy's setting as fin de siècle New York. The company will lead audiences on Shakespeare's lively journey of mistaken identities, misguided lovers, and joyous celebration, recasting the play's setting to New York City circa 1900. Employing its signature "Panoramic Theatre" staging style, the company will escort audiences, pausing to hatch a confusion of plots and declare various passions against a backdrop of waterfalls, bridges, and shady groves.

Dance Performance | Electric Midwife, New Choreography by Beth Gill


Electric Midwife is choreographer Beth Gill’s most recent work. Premiering in 2011, it received multiple Bessie awards, and continues to be performed both nationally and internationally. Conceived from a fusion of concept and form, Electric Midwife is a performance of symmetry, in which six women form two trios that mirror each other’s movements with a kind of hyper-precision. The dancers’ actions create an intricately patterned tapestry in which the lines of their bodies trace the space and outline the two corridors within which they encompass.

World music superstar ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO, named one of the “World’s 100 Most Inspiring Women” by the Guardian UK, curates this very special commission tribute to Wangari Maathai, the late Nobel Peace Prize winner and Kenyan political, environmental and women’s activist. WOMEN WAGING PEACE features a concert with an opening set by “world music luminary” (The New Yorker) SOMI followed by Kidjo and her band, who will be joined by special guests LAURIE ANDERSON and the great South African opera star SIBONGILE KHUMALO.

Celebrate the 65th anniversary of the José Limón Dance Company and the “Summer of Limón” series. The company will premiere Come With Me, a specially commissioned dance piece set to live music by world-renowned Cuban composer, Paquito D’Rivera and choreography by Rodrigo Pederneiras of Brazil’s Grupo Corpo. This new work is Pederneiras’ first commission for a U.S dance company and D’Rivera’s first dance commission.

A striking woman of unusually elastic voice, Nora McCarthy infuses her music with poetry and theatricality that's both stark and sensual and has thus far had a very productive and significant musical career. Showcase, which is performed in a hotel room, is the story of a businessman preparing to attend a conference. Alone yet not alone, he uses the time spent in his room to reconcile his thoughts in the room with what exists outside of it.
