City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

City Walk | The High Line Sunset Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. Reservations Required RESERVE NOW

Discussion | Iraq: Remembering a Forgotten War

Just 10 years after the U.S. invasion, Iraq is already being called the "Forgotten War." News organizations began scaling back on-the-ground reporting there soon after the U.S. declared an end to major combat operations in May 2003, and today only a handful of foreign bureaus remain in Baghdad. The costs of staying were high -- both in terms of finances and safety. The Iraq War was the deadliest conflict for reporters documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists. How did the danger of reporting shape news coverage of the war? What are the enduring narratives out of Iraq from the past decade? How are local and international media covering the latest wave of deadly attacks that have renewed fears of civil war? Join a group of brave journalists for a conversation about media coverage of the Iraq War and the country's reconstruction -- as well as the impact the story has had on their own lives. The speakers are: Hannah Allam, National Correspondent and former Middle East Bureau Chief, McClatchy Newspapers; Rajiv Chandrasekaran, Senior Correspondent and Associate Editor, The Washington Post and Author of Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone; Ahmed Fadaam, Assistant Professor of Communications, Elon University, and former News Reporter, TV Editor, and Producer, Al Jazeera English, Baghdad Bureau; Michael Kamber, Author, Photojournalists on War: The Untold Stories from Iraq, and former Photographer and Writer, The New York Times Baghdad Bureau.

Reading | The Birds and the Bees: The Recital

Back in the day, people used to have to memorize texts for school, to keep a few lines of prose or poetry in their hearts at all times, easily accessible in any situation. This practice has mostly gone to the wayside--no longer do whole classrooms of miserable schoolchildren have to recite "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by heart--but it begs the question: what text would you choose to burn into your brain if you could choose anything at all? The Recital is a new literary series where they want to answer that question. Writers and performers will each recite a 1–3 minute piece of their choice. The only real rule is that the memorized text cannot be their own; otherwise, anything goes. Hosted by Rachel Syme and Maris Kreizman. With: Ami Greko, Bex Schwartz, Jayson Greene, Matthew Love, Nick Douglas, Steph Opitz, Cole Stryker, Nozlee Samadzadeh, Pilot Viruet.

Performance | Voices in the Desert, featuring Fragments of Literature, Theater and Speeches

Presented by the Kairos Italy Theater, the preeminent Italian theater company in New York City, this is a concert of voices from the past, made in several languages, to recycle memory and understand that what is true now was true and important decades, even centuries ago. Born from an idea by Italian author Marco Melloni, "Voices in the Desert" aims to collect fragments from literature, theater and public speeches of important international figures which hold deep resonance with current events. The surprise is that what appears to have been written today might have been written decades if not centuries ago. The performance is multilingual. Fragments are read in their original languages and sometimes in the languages they have been translated to.
