With Adam Sobel, Ph.D., atmospheric scientist and Professor of Engineering and Applied Science and the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. This illustrated lecture explains how experts predict the weather—and storms like Hurricane Sandy—and how improving technology is making the science more precise. Scientific questions raised by Hurricane Sandy will be answered. What kind of storm was it? How well was it predicted? How rare an event was it - was it a 50-year, 100-year, or 1000-year storm? What do we know about storms like this, and what don't we know? Can we expect more such storms in the future, and what should we do to prepare?

Staged Reading | Play Reading: Green Eden by Noah Mease

In the present time, Philip Cummings invites a young poet from Spain to his drafty, lonely house to read a long-forgotten memoir. In August 1929, Philip Cummings had invited the famous Spanish poet Federico García Lorca to a rented cabin by Lake Eden in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, where they got lost in their dark, confusing feelings for each other. But this new poet, sifting through yellowed pages and faded photographs, is also chasing a memory of Lorca (or perhaps his ghostI) and, as the night grows late, time melts, the two Spanish poets blur, and the lines between history and memory and poetry and translation begin to disappear. In English with some Spanish.
