Opening Reception | Carlo Proietto's Fired Creations, the Rare Art of Pyrography

Italian artist Carlo Proietto in a solo show. This innovative exhibition highlights the rare art of pyrography, or, the decoration of wood or leather with heated tools or flame. While the tradition of writing and creating images with heated tools may be traced back to the Middle Ages, modern technologies have enabled new pyrographic techniques that allow for increasingly delicate and layered creations. The combination of inlay, indentations, and polychrome in contemporary pyrographic artwork has opened a door to a whole new world of searing creativity.

Opening Reception | Group Show: DNA: Strands of Abstraction

Mirroring the change rippling through all levels of American society, the 1960s marked a period of painting defined by its unbridled experimentation. The façade of Abstract Expressionism burst and fragmented as a generation of younger artists continued to push the medium in myriad directions. This new wave of artists expanded the boundaries of abstraction, experimenting with space, optics, color and materials. Now-canonical movements such as Op Art, Color Field and Minimalism helped re-define painting in broader, imaginative terms.

Opening Reception | Installations: Cameron Gray's Birth of a Legend

Roberta Smith and Jerry Saltz claim that "Cameron Gray is too big to fail," and Paddy Johnson of Art Fag City asked for "more cheddar" with her order of Cameron Gray. Gray's latest exploit serves up a Dionysian smörgåsbord of state-of-the-art digital technology, where kaleidoscopically bright palettes and hypnotic kitsch run rampant. With your senses utterly titillated and suitably doped, you'll discover his artistic touch is as light as his work is raucous; speed of play carefully calibrated, execution satirically dead-pan and content spot-on HOT.

Lecture | Scientific Assessments: Policy Communication Successes and Failures

A lecture by Anthony Janetos, Director of the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University. Scientific assessment processes have evolved over the past several decades as a means of communication between scientific communities and policy and decision-making communities. Examples come from international environmental issues, such as stratospheric ozone depletion, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity. They also are becoming common in national and regional contexts as well. But not all these efforts are equally successful at their goal of informing policy debate. This presentation explores some of the reasons why this might be the case, from an experiential viewpoint.
