From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | Why Does Formal Logic Start With the Classical Greeks?

In this lecture, Michael Shenefelt and Heidi White tell the story of logic’s development during the days of Aristotle, and they also trace its development in later periods, including those of the Stoics, through to the medieval world of Peter Abelard, and then to a violent and fanatical world of religious warfare that was observed by René Descartes. They trace logic’s history up to its current incarnation as modern symbolic logic, which underlies modern digital computers, and they also argue that symbolic logic first arose in the nineteenth century as a consequence of the Industrial Revolution. They see politics, economics, and social change as key elements of this story.
