Dance Performance | Dance Performance: The Set Up: I Nyoman Catra

Initiated in 2012, The Set Up is an eight-part series made by Wally Cardona and Jennifer Lacey with eight international artists viewed as masters in their respective disciplines. Each master is invited to teach what they think is most important about the form to which they have devoted their lives. This is followed by periods of response and reflection that culminate with a final piece. Displacing contemporary practice by “camping” within a tradition of mastery, the choreography happens in the layers of superficiality and depth inherent in assumption of the universality of dance.

Opening Reception | Zhang Dali's Square: New Sculptures, Cyanotypes and Paintings

The name of the exhibition, Square, is a reference to Tiananmen Square. It highlights the energy, significance, and power of a place that Zhang Dali refers to as "holy" and "brimming with bright light." Widely known throughout the western world as the site of the 1989 demonstrations for democracy, the Square has become a symbol which is synonymous with oppression and surveillance. In this exhibition, Zhang Dali's reimagining of Tiananmen acts both as a recapturing of the holiness he finds there, as well as a personal declaration to resist oppression.

Author Reading | Donald L. Miller discusses his book Supreme City

The 1920s Jazz Age in New York was a decade of rapid cultural and urban transformation. Innovations such as radio, tabloid newspapers, and movies with sound began to command the attention of New Yorkers, and as Times Square became America’s movie mecca, the center of New York’s cultural life shifted from downtown to Midtown. Donald Miller charts Manhattan’s modernization by delving into the era's brilliantly ambitious personalities and the engineering triumphs, including Grand Central Terminal and the Holland Tunnel, which shifted New York’s commercial, social, and cultural hub to Midtown.

WARPAINT weaves intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy.
